Why Isn't it working?

Hi everyone...

I need some motivation... I just started dieting 11 days ago, and I haven't seen any results. In fact, I've gained a pound. I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

I'm 23, I weigh 211lbs, and I've been limiting myself to between 1400 and 1600 calories. (I average about 1500 calories, 35g of fat, and 180-200g carbs) I run on the ellyptical machine at the gym 3 times a week for 35 minutes.

Should it take this long? Help me, cause I'm starting to feel like quitting, and I CANT QUIT :(

Thanks!

Sometimes it takes a while for our bodies to adjust. Did you just start exercise 11 days ago as well? I would venture to say that your body may be retaining water (sometimes exercise can cause that). I would suggest to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, preferrably more. When I started dieting, I did not see first results for 2 weeks straight. The main thing is not to give up, and keep doing what you are doing. You have to be consistant with being on track with exercise and food, and you'll need to have a lot of patience, because the changes sometimes are very slow. But if you stick to it, they will come! Also, when you starting out, I would recomment not only measuring weight but also measurements, because with exercise program you're bound to gain lean muscles while loosing fat. Since muslce weighs more then fat, you may not always see the progress on the scales, even though you may still be trimming down.

Good luck! Its a long journey, but everyone can do it!

No problem! Welcome to the forum! BTW, being in the forum and entering a challenge has really helped me to stay on track and not give up. You can also start a diary in the weight loss diaries section, where you can write down your food/exercise/thoughts and you'll get some thoughts and support from people on the forum.

Also wit hhte exerciseing you could be gaining muscle
you can try this measure weekly to see if you are looseing inches
and they are correct water retain can cause you to gain and drink lots and lots of water

Don't give up now! That's the easy way out!

You will lose the weight, that elyptical machine works your muscles really hard--in fact I can't do that machine for more than 15 minutes because I start to feel faint it works me so hard--anyway...my point is this: You've probably lost fat and gained muscle and since muscle weighs more the scale is deceiving you by making you think that all your efforts have been in vain. Feel your body, especially your legs...do they feel firmer? Does your waist feel different? Are your clothes just a tad bit easier to button?

Oprah says to not even weigh yourself for the first two months of dieting--and I should listen to her. The scale is not an accurate representation of your efforts--it can't measure fat vs muscle. So now that I've preached I am going to take my own advice and hide the scale for a while. I feel a difference in my waist especially (thank goodness 2200 sit-ups are showing some results) so cheer up!!! You can do it...and we're here to help!!

*super squishy hug*

Thanks so much everyone! I started drinking a lot more water, and I'm down 2 pounds! As for measuring myself, I'm going to start doing that, too, cause I think you're probably right about the new muscle. Thanks again, it's nice to know I'm not alone :)

Keep it up! You're doing well and you have to be patient. It does take a while to notice the results, but don't give up!

Keep us posted on how you're doing!

Definately never give up! It's great you're down 2 lbs now, water is SO important! I've only recently realized this as well:)

Goodluck!!!!!
