why do weight plates keep getting bigger?

It seems like weights keep getting bigger for a given weight.
I really notice this, since most of the equipment I have is from the 1980's. The old cast iron plates are just a solid disc.
I have some newer ones, and they're thinner and have cutouts to make the diameter larger.
Now those plasticy weights seem to be popular, probably because even a 5 pound plasticy weight looks incrediably massive.

Is there a reason for this, or is just to to help peoples egos?

Cost/quality efficiency.

Different materials can sometimes mean bigger materials or less dense ones therefore increasing there size to compensate for the lost of weight.

Better ease of manufacture.

Sometimes they can adjust the size of items to have a better time with the logistics of distributing these products, sometimes, as silly as it sounds, can mean to make it bigger.

Bigger is easier to manipulate, IMO. You can widen your arms instead of having them narrower and closer to your center of gravity, thus making it awkward to manipulate.

They make it so barbells can be off the ground higher too perhaps? I have hurt my back before my doing a deadlift with a barbell that was too low...

I can see a list of reasons but before I go on a 5000 word wall of text I'm just going to stop right here.

There is also the obvious reason, the companies just want to save money and increase profits.
