Why do we fail to achieve our goals?

I thought I'd pose this question to the group because it's something I often struggle with. I start a program with the greatest of intentions, but often lose steam and before I know it I'm back to square one (or worse).

For me, I think it's about sustaining motivation and holding myself accountable. I found success in the past making a bet with friends (sounds weird, I know) about weight loss - I believe this helps keep me motivated. We all have the excuses (not enough time, money, energy, whatever), but many people with these same constraints can be successful.

I would really appreciate any anecdotes on why you may have failed (or succeeded) achieving your goals in the past. If I can really figure out why so many people fall short, perhaps it'll help me in my own pursuits.

Thank you so much.

Hi Sabilo,

Interesting topic. I have a theory that when it comes exercise goals, we fail because we are attached too much to our outcome. we can get so desperate about achieving an outcome, whether it be for weight loss, fitness in general or a totally different area of life. Me personally, I'm consistent in my workout because I enjoy the exercises themselves, the outcome is almost a side benefit(though they are what drives me). I like how easy something is when you just enjoy the process.

Good thread. :) I hope people get engaged in this one.
