why do men lose weight much faster than women?

It is just not fair. One of my male colleges started a diet almost the same time like me. We compared our behaviour of eating quite often and so I would say that we ate almost the same amount of calories a day and exercised the same amount of hours a week. Nevertheless he lost 6lbs more than me! But why?

I really don't think that men do lose faster than women... at least in my experience..

men generally have more muscle than women do so the additional muscle mass can help with metabolism...

but I'd a lso compare percentage lost vs actual lbs lost... If his starting weight is higher than yours is, then the 6lbs might give about the same percentage.

Besides, why does it really matter - don't focus on what others are doing -focus on being consistent with your own behavior...

Plus women are headcases thus find it harder to remain consistent.

:p
I wasn't gonna go there but -in truth, women do tend to find more excuses, i mean justifications, to eat... PMS, PMS, PMS, PMS, mood swings, PMS... men - as a generalization - tend to be a little more disciplined (though I can give plenty of examples of where this isn't the case :D

There was some sincerity in my post, so I feel ya.

I've worked with more women than I have men. That said though, I worked with my fair share of men.... and women always seem to have a tougher time, psychologically, with weight loss than men.

Trust me, I've met my fair share of men who were worse than most women..... but on average......

This coupled with the fact that women are biologically preset for more fat storage and maintenance in order to keep humanity going doesn't help.

I always wanted to be a spoiled princess. Find me a sugar mama....

But I had to go and fall for a damn teacher and I'm the provider. That damn life thing I tell ya!

as Mick sang so wonderfully.

o, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

it's working out well for ya :)

For months, I tried to convince Steve to come to Chicago and take the position offered as my Cabana boy -the uniform, wasn't THAT bad... but ya know he had that whole Hot for Teacher thing going on.... you're more than welcome to the position if you want it :)

It seems like only men want to take part in this discussion. I am quite loney here-girls where are you?! So it sounds like some of you have the opinion that men have more decipline. I think this is absolutely wrong. I think that the gender has got nothing to do with the decipline. I just thought that maybe the metabolism of men and women are different?

As a woman I have to say I tell myself to think like a man when I want to lose weight lol - I say to myself just shut up and do it. I am only successful in my weight loss when I hear this voice in my head that says "Come on pain, is that all you've got?!" lol. Women give in easier to their emotions as in general we are more emotional, to feelings like oh I'm tired, I really want a cookie, I don't want to do this anymore, etc. I think men have a higher threshold for pain.

And as to why your male friend is losing more weight than you when you are eating and exercising the same, maybe it's because he has a higher maintenance/BMR than you as he is probably bigger and heavier and has more muscles than you. So for him to be eating the same as you, he is actually on a more strict diet than you are as he actually needs more calories than you do.

No simple answers...

I think it has to be the muscle vs. fat storage ratio as mentioned earlier in this discussion (cabin boys and princesses aside) more than any psychological difference.
As a teacher for the past 4 years I have seen one common difference between my male and female students of all ages. That being that the female students have been BY FAR the more dedicated, responsible and hard working students! Seriously! I often joke with my students that I would prefer all female classes because they are much more likely to do homework, participate in classes, show up and generally make much better progress on a regular basis. Based on that I would think females clearly have more dedication and devotion than their male counterparts. Obviously education and fitness are completely different ballparks, but based on that, the whole "men are harder workers" idea is chucked out the window...

The fact men "typically" carry more muscle is the only real reason I could think of.... Though I have certainly known some beefy gals too.... :)

Umm while i"m not a girl - I am a woman and very very female and have lost a lot more weight than most men I know :D

Gender doesn't have much to do with discipline, that's within a person... but there are some females who seem to find more excuses to stray than males do...

As has been said, the only real difference is men carry more muscle and that does help the metabolism but there's nothing within men's bodys that makes them lose weight at a higher percetage than women do..
