Why are some people afraid of getting "big" (muscular)?

Plus i think for a lot of people, that when you do start becoming bigger you want to keep increasing all the time, so 'not becoming too big' will be out of the window for some.

Yeh I'm sure that happens more often than not but there is merit in saying I dont want to get too big, its not an excuse(for some at least)

I can only speak from a womans view.......

Even knowing now how much effort, time, and hard work goes into getting "big" , the fear of not looking feminine because of defined muscles haunts me. Maybe that is so for other women as well? For the life of me I can't understand why a man would say that and actually mean it.

Women should never be afraid of getting big, because they never will!
Chicks with muscles is so hawt.

Hmm, I've never had that fear because I know it really isn't possible to get that big without an extreme lifestyle or steroids.

Top Reasons men say they don't wanna get too big....

1) Because they're lazy....

2) Because they don't think they can and are preemptively declaring their failure as if to suggest it's their actual intent by design.

3) Because they've felt the pain and know the dedication it'll take and don't want to put it in, so they claim instead they don't want to get big.

but on a more realistic perspective....

4) Because they've seen how former body-builders have problems later on and don't want to take that road.

5) Because a few woman have said they don't like big guys AND/OR they've suggested you're too big as it is and just need to tone and not build more.

6) Because weight-lifting can significantly increase testosterone...which breaks down into DHT..which in turn can make you go bald or increase hair-loss.

7) Because you want to avoid the stereotype. Same thing with owning a Ferrari: you MUST be insecure, compensating for inadequacies and trying to show-off.

8) Because there really are woman out there preaching how they don't like realyl big guys and they just want their men tone & reasonably built. I would say that for everyone one woman who thinks BIG is great, there are about 4 more who think it's absolutely not.

Personally, I don't believe everyone has the genetics to become very muscular and look good with it. The guys who can't do it; they're the ones generally talking about how being big is something they want to avoid....as if to suggest it's by choice.

In the end, we're told we should only care about what we think of ourselves...yet it's human nature to unfairly assign & base our self-image largely on what others think of us. Ironically, our perception of 'what others think of us' is generally misguided, inaccurate and little more then our own projection based on paranoia, insecurities and distorted senses...which means it's still up to us......tough to explain, but either you get it or not.

I think one legitimate issue would reference there being a point at which increased bulk negatively impacts certain types of athletic performance.

Of course this reasoning might actually apply to maybe 1 out of 200 people who utter the words. :p

I agree!!!!

I love biking, but my large chest and muscular upper-body entirely prohibit me from being competitive against these leaner guys! I'm just carrying around too much muscle.

I could do one of those Strong-Man competitions, but my more compact & muscular frame inhibit me from competing against all those lenky/svelt competitive riders. I've met lots of competitive riders and they all have that similar marathon-runners body; skinny, lean, light, long. I have no doubt that my having to haul along all this extra muscular poundage greatly inhibits me. I'm 5' 8" and weight about 225....coming in around 12% body-fat: I'm genetically designed to replace the ox when it keels over in the field from exhaustion and another 1/2-acre still needs to be plowed. I hear cyclist deliberately avoid all upper-body weight-training just to keep themselves light.

That's only cause he was doping!

See kids! Don't do drugs...
