Why are some people afraid of getting "big" (muscular)?

Why are some people afraid of getting "big" (muscular)?

It seems more common with women, but I have also heard some men not wanting to get "too big". Do people realize that getting "big" tends to require a lot of effort with the specific intent to get "big", as opposed to levels of exercising that promotes good health, fitness, strength, and endurance?

I think a lot of men (not all) say they don't want to get 'too big' because they want to lay down an excuse for failure before they start. Setting a bulls**t goal like getting 'toned' is far easier and allows more room for being lazy and skipping training

I think there is also a stereotype of the dumb meathead. And people have know idea how much time and effort is actually required.

its the people who believe those stereotypes that are dumb
from the person in the wheelchair who cant speak forthemselves
the extremley large lady who must be lazy
the very thin person who must diet on laxatives
i enjoyed the film 9-5 the other night (am i gay)
its bollocks and it irks me

I think it is a matter of taste. Some people truly don't want to be huge ( I don't)....but of course all you have to do is not eat enough to get huge ...it's not an excuse to not challenge yourself in the gym

It's actually quite a sad misconception that I don't think people will ever get over. Just yesterday I was talking fitness with a co-worker and she said "I don't wanna drink those whey shake thinggies because I don't want to get bulky muscles".

People don't want to have to fight off the opposite sex. I know the bigger I get, the more women that chase me. :p

Or maybe it's just my sweet Hai Karate' cologne.

i think a lot of people use it as an excuse not to work out

While true to some extent, I have also heard the "don't want to get big" comment from people who do exercise regularly.

Perhaps that is why lots of people (especially, but not exclusively, women) tend to do cardio only at the gym and don't go near the weight equipment.

I'm goign to go the opposite way with this for a second...

I personally dont want to get 'too big'. What I would see as the ideal body is somebody like...say Michael Phelps(the swimmer, actually maybe a little bigger than him), say maybe Paul Walker(the actor) as opposed to a Ronnie Coleman or Arnie. I prefer that 'lean' to the very muscular.

Now I know to get both you need a serious amount of work, a good diet and a positive attitude but I think thats what some people mean when they say too big...Just my 2 cents

getting big

Wow I'd love to get big! 5'9 75kg (don't know that in pounds) Not bodysculpting big but yeah big, toned and hot....If only it happened in the first 6 months. Hopefully it happens eventually.

It does my head in when people say 'i dont wanna get too big tho'

Dont they understand it takes years of hard dedicated work! +

Plus i think for a lot of people, that when you do start becoming bigger you want to keep increasing all the time, so 'not becoming too big' will be out of the window for some.

Being big isnt what its all cracked up to be anyway--in the physical sense.

I have seen the big fall, and the small fall, and sometimes the difference is in the internal quality growing from the inside that makes all the difference.

I am not in the least impressed with someone large or small, but personally am impressed with one growing strong on the inside to facilate the growth on the outside. This combination is deadly.

Most of us, would sell all we have to be healthy, and this starts inward to manefest itself outward.

Let the light shine within to show the beauty you want on the outside!

Keep ROCKEN!
