Why am I not losing weight?

Hi everyone!

I started dieting 5 days ago and doing an hour of yoga a day. (Sometimes morw, depending on my mood.)

The problem is, I'm gaining weight!

I ordered body by vi shakes off of amazon. I am replacing breakfast and lunch with them.

I eat two snacks a day and a good dinner. My calorie intake is between 900-1200 a day.

What's the problem?

First, your caloric intake is too low unless you between 2-3 years old. It's simply not healthy. You probably shouldn't go below 1500, especially if you are exercising. Remember to weigh yourself only first thing in the morning before you eat anything (and after going to the bathroom). This will give you the most consistent results. Second, your daily weight is not of a concern. Your weight can fluctuate quite a bit every day. Your concern should be long term weight loss, month over month, but more importantly your body image. If you are exercising properly (weight training and cardio, for optimum results). than your weight won't be a proper indicator since you will be gaining muscle and losing fat ... muscle is your best way to lose weight, since it is what actually burns fat. The more muscle you have, the faster you will lose weight.

I agree, you should be eating more. How about adding in a few bananas and other fruits. That will give you fiber and add to the calories so you are up at around 1500. Hope all goes well :)

It is frustrating to gain weight when you are trying to lose, especially when you are really trying to lose weight and think you are making all the right decisions towards your goals. I am not familiar with the shakes you mention but this is a topic I really care about. I am not a believer of commercial diets, shakes, and other products sold to promise weight loss. Please read the labels of the foods/drinks that you are consuming. They may be filled with chemicals and that's just not good for you. You mention you eat 2 snacks and a good dinner. Be careful about the fats and processed foods as those can be sneaky calories sabotaging your goals and your health. Depending on your goals, maybe try to incorporate more plant based foods or homemade juices into your eating. Fresh clean juices or smoothies made with coconut water or milk are really good. I probably eat over 1500cals a day, basically I eat when I am hungry, I don't calorie count at all and eat high carb low fat. I do remember one time I tried doing yoga and it was like you, about the 5 day mark I started gaining weight and it was incredibly frustrating. Maybe it is muscle, I'm not a fitness expert so I can't speak to that. But I do know that was the last straw when that happened to me. It was then that I decided I was sick and tired of being overweight and sick and tired!

Also, if your breakfast and lunch consist of shakes that contain a certain amount of calories, yes you will be getting those calories but you will not feel "full." Just thinking for the long term, if you do not feel full for most of the day, and you are seeing weight gains, you may eventually quit from the effort. Trying upping the calories as mentioned by others, and maybe try some oats with breakfast. Best of luck though, I'm working hard to lose that stubborn weight too.

It is probably water weight don't worry. DO NOT replace your breakfast and lunch with those shakes! Real food is more thermogenic and has more nutrients than supps. Plus protein powders are insulinogenic. Stick with whole food to lose weight.

Hi! I would suggest you give it some time.. weight loss does not come over night and also results usually take a bit time to show. Also I second what AllCdnBoy said. Your caloric intake is WAY to low. I would also suggest to up it to about 1500-1600 otherwise you WILL get food cravings after a few days. Remember to drink lots of water! And also you can try those shakes but I doubt you will get much better results.

Good Luck!
Sarah
