Which scale should I believe??

I've had a regular scale for quite some time (where it actually has the needle that points to the poundage) and just picked up a new . Well... the two scales read about 5lbs differently.

Old scale: reads similar to the gym, but then I couldn't truly tell at the gym since I was fully clothed and it was after a work out...

New scale: Reads the same as my bf's and he says it's very close to the doctor's scale.

The new one says I'm down an extra 3-5lbs (which I love) but I want my weight loss (and starting weight) to be accurate. What should I do?

Pick one scale - and use that...

What you actually weigh doesn't matter so much -ti's how you're feeling and what you're seeing
YOu can step on 20 different scales and get 20 different weights...

Pick one - and weigh the same time in the s ame clothes at the same interval..

Or better still -use atape measure... and forget the s cale :D

But what would you do if your scale broke on your journey?

I'm beginning to have second thoughts about mine. It was a $10 clearance scale at Target. Right now the way I'm determining whether it's "accurate" is weighing myself, then picking up a 10lb dumbell and weighing myself again. If I'm exactly 10lbs heavier, then I trust the scale.

The point is -the scale shoudl not be the be all and end all of your journey - it's onenumber and depending on what scale you step on - you'll get a different number...

I think I may just stick to the new scale AND take measurements. The new scale is digital, more attractive, keeps track of weight change, and gives weight in fractions of a pound. My old scale seems to read differently depending on my center of balance... this one has plenty of room to stand on and I don't have to worry if I'm standing "just right".

Thanks for the input. After I posted this I stepped on my mom's digital scale and it was within 1.5 lbs of my new one... I think my old one is will be in the donation pile very soon. :)

and make sure that the scale is ona flat surface and doesn't move...

Somewhere in here there's a bit of an experiment that someone did with the scale in the bathroom and how they were getting different results before and after a shower... They proved the scale was affected by the shower by weighing a pile of books andgettingn a weight- then turning on the shower for a bit - and reweighing the books -and the books had a different weight...

Yeah but books have a faster metabolism . . . and it was probably water weight . . . they were burning muscle not fat . . .

We should use a tape to see if the books are really losing weight! :biggrinjester:

I do have my scale in the bathroom.... I'll test it out on something I know the true weight of before/after showers. It's odd that the scale would be affected by that, but... there are stranger things in the world. :)
