What's better for the chest Bench or dumbell flys

Going to start working out the chest and am not sure what is best for me
a regular flat bench with straight bar or flat bench with dumbell/flys

I like the dumbell fly's better.

you want size or strength?

My personal favorite it the db bench press. Gotta love throwin the 120's around.. :D  lol

Don't let me fool you, I can only do 'em a couple of times lol...
BTW, 120's are the biggest I've seen; If I ever saw bigger, I think I would kick my butt more to try be able to do 'em...

you can do both. emphasize the harder stuff like presses and look into dips.

someone once said that dips are to the upper body what squats are to the lower body ;)

I believe dbs are better for strength, but a combination of bb and db is probably best. As for size, flyes.

Most people consider flys more of a shaping excercise. Always do presses at the very least. Flys should be your 2nd choice most of the time but you can do both of course.

I'm doing a fullbody routine now so i never do flys.

Dips tend to resemble an incline press and they're a great exercise; they can be hard on the shoulders but most people are pretty safe doing them. I'm a huge fan of 1 arm db pressing because you recruit more muscle fibers than doing a bilateral (using both hands/arms) movement.

Something else that seems missing from a lot of peoples lifting bag-overhead pressing. I'm a huge fan of overhead pressing, in fact, if there wasn't wanting to compete in meets, I'd scrap the bb bench for push press on a permanent basis completely.

You could build yourself an impressive and strong chest w/
bench or dips
1 arm db incline press
push press or military press
cable flyes

So I guess I'll be doing a combination maybe one set of the bar and then two sets of Fly's
How does that sound

It was recommended to do 6-10 reps............So I'm guessing if I can do thirty pounds 6 times then I should stick to that rather than going up to 40 pound dumbells.
So I guess the question is what weight should I start with?

evolution, are you referring to something like sandbag training?

i've been reading up on that a little, thinking of incorporating it later on :)

something else i'm looking into is....wait i dont know what to call it

you hang some chains or straps from overhead and do push ups or flyes with them. chad waterbury suggested a smooth floor with towels or one of those old side to side infomercial deals.

lol, Abear...no, I wasn't specifically speaking about sandbag training but that's a fantastic idea. I don't have a sandbag but I've been using a 1/2 filled full keg to do some overhead pressing with and the uneven weight distribution makes it a hell of a movement. So, yeah...the sandbag stuff woudl be great.

Over at Scrapper has a lot of db and sandbag stuff that's fantastic.

Magyk, why don't you do a 5X5 for bench press (db or bb) and a 3X12 for the flys. I have no idea what weight you'd use but whatever you can do for that amount of reps or one over.

the highest they go at my gym is 150. havent seen anyone use one yet, but i think ive seen 125 or 135 used once.

You should definately use dumbbells instead of a barbell where possible bcos with a bar you can use your stronger arm more to lift the weight which can cause an imbalance. Using dbells means you have to work both sides equally.

Man I would love to see those... I doubt I could do anything with them, but they'd be perty :)... When my gym got the 110's and 120's (after only going to 100) I quickly made my goal to be able to rep the 120's cleanly.. If I had 150's starin me down I'd be in the gym the whole day lol
