Whats at your home gym?

I'm picking up some things to start my 7-days a week workout routine. I'm curious what other people have bought for them home gym (or would like to) so maybe I could get a headstart.

Heres what I'm looking at so far..

Free Weights:
Adjustable Bench:
Misc:

Anything in the fitness world you would like to buy for your home gym? Anything you would recommend *against* buying??

honestly, that's all you need for a solid FBW. Dumbells and a bench. After that, 1 or 2 resistance bands and a stability ball can help you vary it up. Once you are well into working out, a barbell and 300lb's of plates is all that's left. After that everything else is just extra.

Edit: Oh, oh, and a pullup bar. Once you got a bench and dumbells, get a pullup bar before anything else. They are usually only 20-40$ too, and totally invaluable for working your back and arms.

home gym

  • medicine ball, with or without handles
  • chin up bar
  • dumbells
  • plan pot stand with wheels (dolly)
  • boxing gloves and target pads for a bit of partner training
  • swiss ball
  • pilates door gym (resistance tubing)
Altogether about €150, bought in dribs and drabs

OP, your potential bench is not a good one. The seat at the end is large and flared out. It's awkward to sit on. Get a regular bench that is adustable and less fancy. Incline work is diffucult if the seat does not angle up and stop you from sliding down (your bowflex one will cause sliding)

And as for the posters, wtf? The internet is free, and has more exercises.

A bench, a squat cage, a bar, and some plates a good combo.

I've gone through a bit of equipment. What I use most (at home) and has worked the best for me:

bar, plates, gymnastic rings, sledgehammer, tire.

Granted, most of what I do at home is just complementary to what I do in the gym.

I recently picked up a powerrack from Sams club online for $189, was about $100 off. It's working out great. I can bench to failure and squat without a spotter which is great since I usually work out alone. Has a pullup bar as well. Also bought a bench like the one Lei posted from a local 2nd hand sports equipment store for $200, an olympic bar, and a bunch of weights. I had a Punching bag and olympic dumbells already which I still use.

I purchased this setup after I almost had an accident while doing dumbell presses. Was doing 55lbs per dumbell and the weights slid off the end. After that I searched online and found the rack. Plus I needed to start squating and the pullups.

Jerm knows what's up. If you can squat and do pullups, you are set. Actually, that should be the criteria for making a home gym in the first place.

True, but how do I see the exercises on the internet while I'm working out in another room? I just thought about having it as a good beginner's guide. Not worth the $20?

Gotcha, found a new bench: . Look good?

Is this what you were referring to: ?

I don't see how that's supposed to be used.. looks like just metal bars.

swiss ball

Is this a swiss ball?

What exercises do I use it for? Can I add it to a FBW?

Nah. You should figure out the exercises you will do before you start lifting. It keeps the intensity up to refrain from looking at the poster all the time.

The angle for the bottom part doesn't look like it's enough. The bell-shape flare at the end is awkward. You want one that will physically stop you from sliding down when you put some weight in your hands.

You have to buy the bar and plates. The cross bars are for spotting when you don't have a spotter.

You think that bench is bad...wait to you see mine!

as for buying weights i tend to get mine off ebay, seem to be cheaper than what the fitness stores sell them for, here in Australia there is always someone getting rid of their weights on ebay. i saw 60 kgs of weights go for $28 the other day, were the chepeast in store ive found is $1.20 per kilo, i mean unless ur after brand spanking new weights, but too me a kilo is a kilo

Unfortunately I can't find another bench that is reasonably priced (the others want $400-600.. for a bench? I don't think so). I'll have to make do.

I'll checkout Ebay for more weights, thanks!

That's the exact one I have. Some people said I should get one that can support more weight but this supports up to 500 lbs and others were a lot more $$. I'm happy with the purchase, plenty sturdy for the weights I'll be using for the foreseable future (weigh 180 and am squatting 245 for reps atm). Check to see if there's a local 2nd hand sports equipment store. There's a few in the Milwaukee area by me. Got my bench there and they also have weights for $0.30/lb. Olympic bar ran me about $45.

If you plan on working out alone and want to bench or squat I highly recommend a power rack. Plus they have the pull up bar and separate attachments you can buy for lat pulldowns and dips if you want it.

Forgot to mention, I also have 2 saw horses from my garage that I just started doing dips with, had to improvise :)

Bench/Squat Rack/Dip Station Combo (and some other attachments I don't use)
Olympic bar + Weights
Pull Up Bar
Dip/Pull Up Belt
Ab wheel
Elliptical Machine

1 standard barbell 3 pairs of standard dumbbells, about 200 lbs of standard weights

2 olympic barbells 1 pair olympic dumbbells 600 lbs in olympic weights

squat rack

bench setup

3 incline decline benches

pullup bar

Power rack for 189 is probably the best deal i've ever heard of. Auction? I must have one...

Yeah, it was on the Sams Club auction site. They have great deals there every once in a while. It's usually items that are overstocked or a certain store wants to get rid of. Some good deals can be had on treadmills at times if anyone is looking.
