What "turned the key" for you?

Morning,

Back in December 2006, I was over 170 pounds on a 5'3.5" frame (even though my ticker reads 168 - I didn't have the courage to weigh myself for several weeks back then).

I vividly remember coming across one of my kids' candy necklaces and carefully watching about, devoured it with no one the wiser. No one, that is, except myself....because not only did it cause a massive stomach ache, I had the poor (wise?) judgment to look at myself in the mirror.

I think that was the wakeup call I needed, and what really 'turned the key' for me wrt getting healthy. I was faced with the stark reality of an unlying, uncomplimentary mirror...and I realized that I'd just keep getting fatter and fatter if I didn't change my habits.

That afternoon, I revisited some of my earlier workouts I used to do, and attempted my beloved 2.4 mile circle walk. Walking at the blinding pace of a comatose parakeet, I managed to complete it in 1.5 hours, repeating to myself all the time, I can DO this.

That's what started me on my current path. 10 months and 35+ pounds later, I think I can confidently say, I'm in this for the long haul.

What started it for you?

Enjoy,

Barbara

In all the pregnancy books they say if you don't lose the weight in the first year it will be much harder to lose it later. My son was 9 months old when I realized my time was almost up and I had hardly lost anything! I didn't want the fat to stick so I got my act together and set my focus on becoming slim.

Great thread!

Back in June i had started working out regularly but not really pushing myself. And I was still eating mostly like crap thinking the exercise would be enough...really I knew better but didn't want to face it. Until July..my fiance and I had just gotten back from eating at a great italian restaurant and decided to stop off at the 7-Eleven turned Kwik-E-Mart in Dallas to take pics. Well we went around and took pics etc. including standing beside Comic Book Guy (google him if you don't know what he looks like) painted on the outside of the building. When I looked at the pic I was aghast at what i was looking at. My belly was the same round shape as Comic Book Guy! (the fatest character on the Simpsons) I was embarrased at how I let myself go and right then I decided it was time to tackle this with full force. I'm so glad we went to the Kwik-E-Mart that night!

I had a baby last year, so we got photographed a lot. Somebody sent me one of the photos and a realised I had to lose weight and teach my daughter how to eat well. That same night I had to go out and I had NOTHING to wear except old granny clothes and I was embarrassed (I think my fiancé was too).

For me, it happened when NONE of my clothes fit anymore and I had to buy a few new clothes in bigger sizes. I try to think about dieting and losing weight as a cost-effective measure - I can't afford to buy a new wardrobe. Unfortunately the few things that DO fit me have to be worn over and over again.

I joined this program last year or so..shed about 30 pounds (5'6" went from 180 to about 155-160) then quickly fell off the routine..now my laziness has crept up on me. Realizing my waist size has increased by 1.5", making a lot of my pants tight-fitting is (and hopefully will stay) as the "key" that got me on board again.,

I'm now at 190..thats fastfood for you everyday.. So now I'm on a heavy cardio plan and watching what I eat.

Trying to appeal to another girl is great motivation for me :) I'm supposed to be playing hockey and skiing occasionally over this winter so it gives me even more reason to break my stupid habits and get back into this program.

Hopefully we can all help each other through this!

Hello Barbara,

my thing about a year ago was the information someone gave me to balance my body pH and my acid-alkaline intake of foods.

A balanced pH level means that our system functions optimally at a shlightly alkaline level. The pH scale for measuring acidity and alkalinity ranges from 1 to 14 (7 means neutral). Anything above 7 is alkaline, anything below 7 acidic(btw, soda or cola has a pH of 2.5, which is highly acidic).

Our body's pH level is slightly alkaline, and that is why diet and nutrition should also reflect this. In this regard I never consume more than 20% of neutral and acidifying foods (burgers, omelette, muffins etc.), and at least 80% of alkalizing and alkaline foods, such as green vegetables, salads and avocados.

It worked out great for me. Since then I am eating foods that are alkalizing and I feel great! My body dropped to its healthy weight (no more fat cells needed to carry away acids from vital organs), my food cravings diminished (not all and every one of them *lol*) and my energy levels increased immensely.

Take care,
Mel
