What to do when no gym is available?

I'm staying with my parents down in North Carolina for the summer before I head back to school in the fall. I don't have my license yet (though, that should change soon because I'm taking lessons at the moment) so I can't go anywhere without someone else driving me.

I've just started a basic routine of running a mile or so and after returning home, I do push-ups, sit-ups, and leg raises. (Speaking of push-ups, my wrists kill after doing a set. I haven't been doing them since I was a teenager, are there any alternatives?)

Any other way I could work around my lack of equipment? I would mainly like suggestions on working my arms and chest.

Thanks for your help.

What part of NC you in out of curiosity?

Makeshift workouts are actually something I quite enjoy doing. You just have to get creative. It also though depends to a degree on your goals. Arms and chest doesn't say much. Basically I am assuming you want them bigger?

List out some goals, maybe we can help. :)

Find heavy things. Lift them. Carry them. Drag them.

Or bust out a bodyweight playground workout, dips and pullups etc...with whatever you can find. Or look for some cheap used equipment at yard sales, garage sales, and so on

theleip, I'm in Asheville, NC.

I don't get too specific with my goals but my primary goal is to lose this gut that I have, along with building up my chest and my arms. I'm 5'7", 163 lbs or so.

Basically, I follow the routine I listed above every other day and on the other days I spread a huge pile of wood chips with a shovel. The yard work with the wood chips should help because three years I was doing the same thing for a whole summer at a public garden I worked at. In three months, I went from 155 to 140 lbs. I also occasionally used the gym in my building.

I'd also say, that if you can perform more than twenty push-ups, look into explosive/plyometric push-ups, perhaps elevated plyos, w/ backpack, etc. Use your imagination to apply more loading and force output.

The pain in your wrists shouldn't really be a problem if it goes away in a week. If not rest for a bit. Yeah, do variations of Push Ups, dips, explosive work. As people have said, find heavy, lift heavy, drag heavy. Good luck.
