What the heck ...

Howdy, all!

Well I've hit a new high (258 lbs) and have to admit it's time to do something about it. This forum seems friendly and helpful, so what the heck! A little support couldn't hurt.

I'm 40 years old, male, about 6', and have greatly enjoyed lengthy periods of beer tankards and over-indulging. I have also very much enjoyed a few periods of fitness and leanness. I've repeatedly gone on exercise and nutrition kicks that lasted for a year or two each and then (not so) slowly regained the weight.

Eight years ago, I went from 230 to 170 ... although I began to gain fat in 2004, the most recent 30 pounds are a bit of a surprise. I mean, I've never seen them before! Where did they come from? Har har har.

My target weight this time is 180 lbs and I have incremental goals along the way ... including landmarks at 230 and 200. 78 lbs to lose ... seems daunting to think of it all at once ...

Anyway, I look forward to reading your posts and getting information and inspiration from your experiences!

RIGHT!!! which is why it's important to set small weekly or monthly goals! Doing a LOT of anything can be very daunting which is why it's important to break it down into smaller goals....
just like house cleaning!
welcome!

Oh... yeah.. you sort of need some sort of plan. Do you have any exercise goals in mind? Do you have plans to alter your current eating habits?

Hey Monster, thanks for the reply!

I totally agree ... incremental goals and a flexible strategy are the key to success.

I'm new to the forum and still finding my way around ... would like to read what other people are doing, what goals are being set on a weekly/monthly basis, etc. Any tips?

I'm still working out the details of my plan, but essentially I am going to focus on resistance training and nutrition. Sadly, most of the beer will have to go.

I'll be consuming approximately 2,250 calories per day, spread over as many meals as I can fit in (hopefully at least 5) with about a 40/40/20 breakdown of protein/carbs/fat made up of whole grains, nuts (not peanuts, which are legumes), lean meats (possibly sneak some red meat on Sundays) and fresh fruits and veggies.

Strength training will consist of compound exercises alternating between lower body/upper body days and possibly some push/pull days thrown in just to keep me interested.

I've done this a few times before :) And, honestly, I'm excited. Right now I'm in that familiar phase of getting psyched up ... and doing my best to not overdo it at the gym ... burnout and injury are our enemies.

This might not be the proper thread space ... would hate to break any rules ... but what are your plans?

Okay... first... your goals. KEEP THEM EASY!!!! If you shoot for about 10 lbs / month, your weight will come off in no time!
Second.... Why no cardio? I know people do different things different ways, but your legs are powerful, and you can use them to burn off lots of calories.
Third... you're on the right track, a lot of people feel that mixing up exercise to keep yourself interested, is great way to lose weight. There's a lot of other reasons why, but I'm not the expert on that stuff. (have a look a the exercise forum)
FOURTH, you're absolutely right, don't over do it, but DO IT. If you make plans to go the gym, go to the gym. Even if you don't get much of a workout in any particular day, you're making a HABIT of going to the gym, which is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH (can't overstate it enough) more important than any particular workout on any given day.
Weight loss is all about making good habits.
Weight gain is all about habits also, but not the right ones.

Hi bubbawubba, it takes time to learn to maneuver around the forum. We all had that problem at first.

Scroll to the top of the New Comers thread. Click on New posts, just watch the dates of the threads. There are lots of old threads on the forum. You will do fine. I started out by saving to my favorites, so could get back easy to a thread/post. You can click on the User Cp and find todays post. Just look around you can't hurt anything. Type AnnaGail's Diary in the Search Forums and it will take you to my diary. Also check out the Heroic Mode 90 day challenge a lot of diary's are posted on that thread. Just asked questions and anyone will help you.

Good Luck to you!

Thanks for the tips, AnnaGail ... will come in very handy!

Monster, you are absolutely correct about cardio ... Even in my worst lazy times, I have always managed to get in a couple of sessions per week ... let's see ... adding cardio for increased weight loss: I start every strength session with very very VERY gentle cardio (about 10-15 minutes, keeping heart rate under 140) to get warmed up and generally end with a cardio cooldown. You think I should consider doing more?

Once I drop sufficient weight, I'll start running again.

I see you've started a workout club thread! See you there!
