what shoes do you wear?

I love my Nikes :)

I am looking for a new and better pair of running shoes for walking, what do you all use?

use walking shoes for walking. not running shoes.

And if you do get running shoes, only use them for running. Have a good set of walking shoes (or ideally lifting shoes) for resistance training. Cross Trainers should work as well for resistance training...

I worked in a Famous Footwear for about 7 years so I know a few things about shoes.

I am partial to New Balance. I have worn them for many years. They have great support and tend to be fairly durable. With New Balance each shoe model has a number 810, 403, whatever. Generally with New Balance the higher the model number, the more support is has and the better quality shoe it is.

Asics are also excellent athletic shoes. Great support.

Nikes are good also, depending on what kind.

One thing to keep in mind is that generally you are going to get what you pay for with shoes. If you are going to be doing lots of exercise in them, don't skimp. Your feet will appreciate it, and they will last longer.

You can get a cheapo pair but more times than not they will wear out and fall apart much sooner than a better model. Thats not to say though that you can't find a good pair on sale if you do some shopping.

Ask the sales people for help. That is what they are there for. They can usually steer you towards the better shoes that they carry.

Personally I like the Vibram Five Finger shoes. They allow your feet to land in a more natural way and in my experience provide a more intense "burn" after the run. They are pricey and akward when you first start using them, that said I have been using them all summer and could not be happier with the purchase.

Just be careful with the 5 Finger Shoes if you need arch support because it really doesn't have any. Those are designed to be the most like walking or running barefoot.

Personally I really want to try them for hiking but my arches are terrible and I don't know if it would be a good idea for me. But they so sound SO comfy :)

They are awesome once you are used to them. As far as flat feet are concerned you can still wear them but you need to take it easy at first while your feet and muscles adjust since they will not have the orthopedic support items you may currently be using. It is hard to say everyone will experience this the same but after a quick search on them it seems people with flat feet generally are able to adjust to them. They are kind of a big investment though so if you do have flat feet before you drop the money on a new pair try finding a place that sells them so you can get fitted then try to find a used pair online (an thoroughly clean before using...).

Thank you MattV1984! I really want to try a pair, I think the ones I saw online that were the all terrain ones were around $80?
I might just cave and get myself a pair :)

Some times we need to spoil ourselves =)
If at all possible I highly recommend going to a retailer that sells Vibram Five Fingers before you purchase any online, the Vibram shoe sizes are different than normal shoes sizes so it is a good idea to get fitted for the right size. If you do get a pair keep the adjustment period in mind. The first time I used them when running I could really feel the difference in my muscles but it only took me about a week to get used to them.

Hrm, surprisingly noone has said "go to a store that actually knows their shit about running shoes and ask for help". They will, if they do indeed know their shit, put you on a treadmill, look at how your feet runs, probably take some stills to look at, look at the angle of your feet etc. and give you a range of options for shoe models that will work for you, in different price ranges.

Apologies for the thread necro I just... there is no "good for everybody" running shoe, feet are very different. Its like asking "whats the universally best size bra"...

I use Asics gt 2150 perfect stability support for long runs. As far as barefoot running I will be changing to that style of running in the near future once I feel comfortable enough that I have lost the lbs and my body can handle it. Vibram shoes in the future for me

Have you considered cross trainers for walking? they have more cushioning than standard walking shoes, and of course, can be used for other exercises as well.
I always wear mine ... every where.
