Greetings friends,

I am from india. Not that fitness isnt a craze here, but its more of a business here, and i need some honest counselling. I walk for about 1.2 miles (this is embarressing, i walk 2 kms but it just adds to 1.2 miles after conversion). What else other than this do i need to impart? I have tried gyms, they dont work for me. I have been a believer of old sweat n blood, here gyms r air conditioned, nyways.

So what else other than this do i need to impart? I am a total newbie, with a lot of fat to burn and 6 months is my targetted timeframe.:blush5: can someone help me with a workout plan or guide me from where to procure one? I am 242 pounds (110 kilos) and my target is 165 pounds ( 75 kilos)..

Please help!

Welcome!

What you do is less important than just DOING it. Whether you are lifting weights, doing cardio, or walking for longer distances, you just need to make sure youre getting more active on a daily basis. Once you start seeing your body begin its transformation you will start having a lot of fun! What do you enjoy doing the most? Lets start there.

I think the best thing you can do if i you live in india is yoga. Where do you live? I love iyengar yoga.

There is a line of thought that believes that sweating is good for you. Its a myth that you lose body toxins through sweating. Sweating is good if you are hot. Sweating helps you cool down but only if there is a breeze. The gain in not sweating is that it is easier to do your workout and keep working rather than getting exhausted from overheating and dehydration.

I think this incorrect line of thought actually began in india because i came across it from a local yoga teacher. Well bugger that i thought, i'm not doing your class. I'm taking my money elsewhere.

But if i was in india, i doubt that most yoga centres would have airconditioning. So i would just do it anyway.

You can also go swimming. Or take up bike riding. But trust me, if you are going to ride a bike, you have to ride a long way before you get much benefit of it, especially if the only weight you are carrying is your own body weight.

Hey Billy and Forty! Thanks a lot for ur inputs, i shall reply user wise,

Billy, i like playin games, like tennis, squash cricket etc. I mentioned these names coz at one time i used to play them. now, well its a different story! the problem im facing is while walking quickly, my lower sheens start to pain. and thats not after a walk, its just when i gain momentum, halfway thru my pain shoots, and i become discouraged. i start to feel, when i cant walk fast how the hell will i lose this bulk! Any tips on the pain front?

Forty, right on about the Yoga! lemme tell u a hindi maxim, its "deepak tale andhera", heh i know u wudnt have understood, il explain:blush5: a lamp gives everyone light but jus underneath it, its completely dark. same is with yoga and india. people here are so into gymming and flexing muscles that yoga is either restricted to villages or DVDs or to foriegn enthusiasts like yourself. i am a case in point. But i shall do some research in yoga as prescribed by you:beerchug: iss there any other advice u wud offer me?

Thanks in advance

Hi Knight, and welcome.

I don't have any advice on exercise (I'm in a gym and loving it), but have you thought about the role of diet in your weight loss? If you're eating more calories than you're burning (and most people eat more when they exercise), then you won't lose weight. Exercise is very important for health, but diet is probably most important when you're looking to lose weight. Just something to think about.

I agree with Amy. When I started exercising for the first 2-3 months I just did 30-45 mins of moderate exercise a day and I remember losing only about 5 pounds throughout that whole 3 months. However, when I started watching my diet, I started losing 1-2 pounds a week (I kept it healthy only cutting 500 calories a day plus the exercise). I think watching your diet will be an easier and faster way to get to your goal and adding on exercise will help you burn off the pounds very efficiently. Good luck with your weight loss!
