What it do?

Since I'm a new member, I will introduce myself.

I found this site by typing in fitness.com. I subscribe to a few "healthy" magazines but I don't use what's in them to get me to where I want to be. But I'm looking to change that now.

I graduated from college 6 1/2 years ago and even though at that time I was not happy with my weight, I wasn't as big as I am now. What kept me from gaining 50 pounds then was how much I walked. I didn't have a car so if we need to go to the store, we walked. We wanted to eat McDonald's we walked.

I'm also 1/2 Native American and live on a reservation. I see every day what obesity and it's complications can do to people. Right now we have about a 52% prevalence of diabetes in our community not to mention everything that can come with it; heart disease, stroke, amputations, blindness. On my mom's side of the family alone, I think there are only a few of us who are not diabetic. Everyone else is diabetic; my mother, sister, 2 of my aunts, 1 of my uncles, my great aunt, numerous cousins. I know what I need to do so that I don't become that statistic.

I'm hoping to get some good advice from here to put to use in my everyday life that will get me healthier and losing some of the weight I have put on. And hopefully fight the disease that so ravages Indian Country.
