What is this weird foot injury after running?

I went running for the first time in years the other day. Went a mile and a half.

The next day, my legs are only barely sore, but my left foot is unusable to walk on. If I step down, if feels like a 4 inch needle is going into my heel.

I dont believe it could be a pinched nerve or pulled muscle, because from what I read, you feel those when they happen, not the next day.

I dont believe it's bruising, as I cant see any visible bruises, and I can press and squeeze all over my foot with my hand as hard as I can and it feels normal...no pain. no swelling. no marks or discoloration. But then I go to walk on it, and ouch, there's the stabbing pain again.

It doesnt hurt on impact with the ground, its more like when the foot does it's natural "rolling" motion during walking, combined with my body weight. If I only walk on the ball of my left foot, it's fine.

In the past 48 hours, since it started, The only thing rest has done has bought me a few steps I can take before the pain is back as strong as ever.

So I'm thinking no pinched nerves, no pulled muscle, no bruising, and I cant imagine it's regular muscle tearing soreness...my legs arent hurting, nor did my other foot. I never heard of getting sore foot muscles from running before anyway. I'm concerned/annoyed about what is going on here.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks much in advance.

Are you running in old shoes? It sounds like a generic answer, but poor running shoes can cause all kinds of problems.

Possibly a stress fracture that is agravated by plantar flexion of your foot. I would go and see your doctor. I have had stress fractures and the symptoms were similar.

Similar issues

I have had similar injuries with my foot. I used to be in the military and ended up having repetitive issues with my right foot after a military accident. Ive torn my achilles twice 6 years ago. Then I finally got cleared for physical activity and bam two weeks later I was left feeling like my right foot was wrong. I got it checked out and due to my history with the foot, the doc gave me special attention. I didnt feel a terrible amount of pain except with the "natural rolling" as you previously put it. No pain upon impact, just a feeling of discomfort. I got it checked out and I had a torn peroneal brevis this time after 2 weeks of exercising. I highly suggest you ask for an MRI right away. The sooner the better. Hope this helps!

the best thing to do when you encounter this is, Heat and ice therapies can minimize stiffness and swelling, keeping minor injuries from turning into major problems. Gel shoe inserts can add much-needed cushioning, delaying or preventing overuse injuries of the feet and legs. Ice is the original anti-inflammatory, reducing swelling and pain. I hope this could help! :)
