What is the lowest weight I can get away with?

Ok, so I'm 113lbs right now, and hate the way I look. My legs are gross - fat and just ,well, enormous - my arms are thick, and I have a 'tummy' I never had before. I'm 5' 6.5", and age 40. My question is, how much can i afford to lose? I'm hoping for 10 lbs and see what I look/feel like after that. Thanks guys, and good luck with all your weight goals too!

Hi there, it sounds to me like you need to work on muscle tone rather than "weight loss". If you are 113lbs at 5' 6.5" you should technically look very slim, but if your body fat percentage is high and your lean muscle mass is low you will have flabby bits. It definitely isn't about how much weight you should lose, but more about changing your body composition by reducing body fat and building lean muscle tissue. The best way to do this is to start a an interval training style workout routine. With diet alone you can lose fat, but you will just become a smaller version of what you are now. If build some lean muscle your metabolism will increase which will mean your body will burn fat more efficiently anyway, plus you have the added benefit of actually changing your body shape.

If you aren't a member of a gym and haven't done a lot of exercise in the past then you might want to consider getting yourself some workout DVDs to kick start your workout routine. I recommend The Firm who have a large number of excellent DVDs, which focus on fat loss and muscle conditioning. Jillian Michaels, Bob Harper, Jackie Warner and Jeanette Jenkins also have some great workouts available.
