what is perfect bench press technique

Hello,

I was in the gym today, and a guy told me I was not doing the bench press perfectly. He said for each rep you are supposed to go all the way down and touch your chest. Is this true?

Reason I ask is that some guys, who are quite big and strong, only go down far enough so that their arms make a 90 degree angle, because they say if u put your arms farther down, you are at risk of injury - pulling a shoulder muscle.

Coach Dan has a good point about full range of motion, some people like to touch their chest, some like to hold the bar 1/2 inch above their chest for a few seconds. Whatever you do but if your touching your chest is to bounce the bar on it. I see people in my Gym doing it and it makes me shudder, it has no positive effects whatso ever, some would say it has negative impacts upon your bench
