What does one say in this situation?

Say, if you are approached in the gym by one who believes, incorrectly, that they have a wealth of information about how you could improve your technique?

and to flip it

If you see someone doing something that could be seriously detrimental to their health (incorrect squats comes to mind) how do you approach that person without sounding like an ass?

Don't approach them. Leave it to someone else, it isn't your problem.

If someone comes to me with advice on my technique and what they are saying sounds plausible, I may check it out with one of the trainers at the gym. However, most of the form and technique I use has come from them anyway.

As for the flipside, I don't profess to be an expert on what is and isn't good or bad technique so, I would keep my opinion that someone else's technique was bad to myself. I may ask one of the trainers if they thought a given technique was bad so I knew for myself but, it is their job to notice and point out bad technique, not mine. They have been trained to do it.

I'm lucky to attend a gym where the trainers are both helpful and seem to know what they are talking about.

If someone gives me stupid or bad advice, I just say smile and say "okay, thanks" and let them move on.

On the other hand, I usually leave people alone unless they are doing something glaringly that will get themselves hurt.

1) Leave my headphones on and pretend I don't hear them. If they catch me with my music off I'll say thanks and move on as evo suggested.

2) I don't pay attention to other people.

ditto...

I also don't make eye contact with anyone in the gym unless they put a hand on me, then they better have a good reason to put a hand on me.

I dont give people the opportunity to give advice, I just ignore others. However I do pay attn to others lifting techniques and forms. I laugh to myself when I see people trying to lift WAY more than they should be. The first time I went to my college gym, there were two guys doing bent over rows, lifting the weight like 2" each rep because of the weight. One guy says to the other "My form sucks today." I get a laugh out of these things.

oh, I know!!! there's this fatsy lady who's always giving me diet advise! and I"m the o9ne who took off the 30 lbs, not her!!!!!

i just humor her. life's too short,....

That must be what I am missing. I am used to working out in an environment where I know almost everyone, and I normally tend to try to make eye contact with everyone I see.

I rarely offer anyone advice on how to do their workouts... but I'm always open to tips/suggestions from others (as long as they look like they know what they're talkin about!!)

In fact, a guy at the gym was watchin me do tricep kickbacks the other day and he pointed out that my right arm was perfect but the left was "all over the place"! At first, i thought "Go do your own damn workout! " haha, but I listened and took note of what he said (simply because he tri's are huge!!)

Now though!.... everytime he see's me workin out, he always points out what I'm doing wrong!

Best thing by far is:

Yeah they are. Im up there once in a while. I have a friend in Portland.

Much friendlier than the people here in CT.

Or here in NJ.

I went to the gym a few months back with a new friend of mine, hardcore about working out. I had to end that quick, because all he said was why you doing this why you doing that. Keep your opinion about which exercises to do to yourself.

As ready as I can get I guess. I'm not so much worried about him being ok, as I am about my seeing this happen. I can watch things like this on tv, but I dont know how I will react to seeing her opened up and all.

At my gym if you say something to someone about their technique they dont like you will probably get stabbed in the carpark!!

Since I workout at school, I pretty much know most people. I don't give help unless they are going to hurt themselves long term, like deadlifting/cleaning on their spines. When people give me tips, I'll follow them according to what the advice is. If it's something I can incorporate into my routine, and it's sound advice, I'll do it. If someone is spotting me and telling me to hit 10 more reps than I wanted to do, I rack that **** when I'm done.
