what does "cut" actually mean?

all over the forums i see people cutting, and baulking,
i know what baulking is.. but what is means when people are "cutting" ?

losing body fat. putting yourself in a caloric deficit basically.

What Junkfood said. When you here people say they want to "tone" it is the same as cutting. To look chiseled and ripped, you need to get to very low bodyfat levels. For most, gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time is next to impossible, so they do their fitness and nutrition in stages. They bulk at times to increase muscle mass by creating a small, healthy caloric surplus. Then, at other times, they try to trim down by creating a small caloric deficit to lose the fat that was gained while bulking, and hopefully maintain most of the muscle they established in their bulking program.

Make sense?

is it true that if u have a lot of bulk muscle, and u try to lose weight, that u will also lose muscle mass? whats the best way to maintain ur muscle mass when trying to lose that extra fat gained while bulking?

Whenever you are bulking, you are most likely going to add some fat along with the added muscle. Conversely, when cutting, you are going to lose some of the muscle you gained previously. It is the nature of the beast. To minimize the lean muscle loss while cutting, you should not cut calories drastically. I never do more then 20% of my maintenance level. If the fat is coming off too slow, I simply train harder with cardio. Also, proper weight training aslo aids in maintaining as much muscle as posslbe while cutting.

so would maintaining a nice body be a neverending, lifelong battle?

not really...as you'd simply eat your maintenance calories, and keep up some forms of exercise.

food, not weights lifted, is what determines if you gain weight or lose weight. you can't build something out of nothing, and you can't lose something if you keep adding a surplus on top of it.

i strongly agree with what u said ;D

although its part of genetics. your not destined to be fat ... in life, u are what u eat. heh

& maintaining a nice body is a pain to some, but its also a *love* for many

eating less or doing more cardio, dont they have the same effect. Either you are taking in less calories or burning more? Whats the difference?
