what do you think?

I'm also 5 foot 8" and cut down over the past year from 193 pounds to 138 pounds (9 stone 13). I lost four stone in British terms. However, that might be a shade light for some people. It depends on a number of personal factors - how much lean body mass that you want being the obvious one. To be honest, theres a flaw with all weight loss. We don't always want to lose weight - what we really want to do is to reduce body fat. Now, a better way to gauge our success is by measuring body fat. There is no cheap reliable way of doing this, although body fat or skin calipers are usually hailed as the best practical method (these electric scales that promise to measure bodyfat using electrical impedance are useless). Alternatively - using a tape measure to take measurements of those fatty areas - most males go apple shaped, so it hangs around the gut and chest. But most of us - myself included simply go for the scales. Just be aware that you are measuring everything on the scales, not just fat, but muscle and organ tissue as well. Some of us are disposed to have more of that lean tissue, hence it being difficult to set some kind of 'standard' for all. Women and men of the same weight for example, will have a different ideal 'weight', because men are likely to have more lean tissue. This is why the BMI is so heavily criticised. Very fit body builders with very low levels of body fat often have obese BMI!

Same problem with calorific allowance. You want to consume less calories than you burn - but how many do you burn? There are calculations around the Net - based on height, weight, gender (your basal metabolic rate) plus what kind of lifestyle that you think that you lead, how much exercise you perform, how hard that you work etc. For example, you could sign up at Fitday.com and that will work it out for you. Hang on though - working out basal metabolic rate (the amount of calories that you would burn if you laid in bed all day, just maintaining your body) is pretty safe, but how hard that you workout is subject to error.

So I find that you have to use these online calculations, make a best guestimate, but be prepared to up and down calorific allowance a bit in order to get it right for yourself. You want to lose between 0.5 and 2 pounds per week. You might lose more the first few weeks, but if you are regularly losing more than 2 pounds per week after the initial rush, then up the calories - you don't want to deplete muscle mass or damage your health.

To lose 1 to 2 pounds per week, with my lifestyle, I consume between 2,200 and 2,600 calories per day. But I'm a 44 year old male, I work long shifts in a power station in a largely manual job, and I lift weights, and I run.

by stooping to a personal level , you proved who most immature , the adult or teenager :D it is kinda fucked up how you can get away with the things youve said , after all , this is a weight loss/fitness forum , in no way did i refer to weight , but yea man , way too go ;)

Dude will you quit making all the stupid nasty fat comments, you're acting like 12, and you seem to forget that you're also obese and have just the same problems as most of us :)

Invalid link, you must have eaten the web page
i love talking to teenagers. they think they're smarter than everyone else and that their insults are so intelligent and never really contribute besides trying to insult people.

wishes is right. someone who is 15 and obese is synonymous with being "dumb AND obese".

Was: 206lb
Now: 174lb
Muscle Mass: 43.8%

So you think that because you are no longer at 206 lbs that it's ok to start name calling and acting like the school yard bully?

Since you have been able to lose weight, are around the same age etc, you might have some good ideas for him, did you think of that? Why not try to help a fellow forum member vs. acting like a 5 year old!

P.S. I'm not very familiar with the Stone weights, but isn't one stone=16 lbs? So that means you weigh around 196? What happened to Now 174? Are you disgruntled because you lost weight and gained it back?

Lol no, 1 stone = 14 lb.

I changed the sig because its outdated. I weighed in today at 12st 4.2. If i do gain any weight it can only be water retention or muscle mass, because i'm persistant and i dont cheat, and stay between 1400-1700 cals a day. I do H.I.I.T. at least 10 minutes a day and weight lifting 3 days a week, but i'm changing that to 6 days a week as long as i dont feel signs of overtraining.

And i dont like Hawch because he acts like a kid, threatening to leave the forum because he didnt get replies within a few minutes of making the thread. And all this nonsense that he loves fruit and veg, if he loved it he wouldnt be obese.

Also im not sure 206lb is obese for someone who is 5ft 10 and has a large bone structure. I might check up on that though.

Stop Bickering!

 You sound like my 9 & 10 year old boys.
If you are serious about improving your health, like the others said, don't concentrate so much on the scales. Take your measurements - about once a week, no more often that that.
You should be working on building muscle while dropping inches(fat, pounds). Don't try to "get skinny" then build your muscle.
They are also right about your calorie level being too low. You should have about 20-25 calorie per day per kg of your present body weight. Take your present body weight in pounds and divide by 2.2 to get kilograms(kg). Then multiple by 20 or 25 to get your estimated calorie level to promote weight loss.
Following the Food Guide pyramid is good advise. It is especially important to get plenty of fresh veggies & fruits. Your grains should be whole grains.
Exercise is a must. Stay away from diet pills and or fad/unbalanced diets.
Good Luck.

Some people believe you should bulk up on a high cal diet and do an intense weight lifting plan. The logic is you build a lot of muscle which in turn increases metabolism so dieting is easier.

Sorry about being off on the stone measurements. Wonder where I heard 1 stone = 16 lbs.. at any rate. It's wrong. So, I learned something useful today. Plus, I don't use the Stone weighing system.

On another note, you can love fruits and veggies and be overweight. It is entirely possible if you eat those for every meal, but also eat other things that push you over your daily caloric needs. Also, there are medical problems that can cause people to be overweight or obese.

you should be doing at least 20 minutes of HIIT ... you don't get any benefit from only 10 minutes (unless you are doing other cardio before/after).
