What do you think is "wrong" when it comes to someone trying to lose weight?

So, just being on this board you can see where peoples values of what is the "right way" to come onto the forum. I have seen quite a few people being ripped a new one or being talked down to because of their choices and methodology for losing weight.

I will admit I have given my $0.02 around here when I see someone doing something blatantly dangerous (not eating enough, eating things that can lead to health problems). So I am wondering with so many methods of losing weight what to do you think is not/should not be considered losing weight the "right way"?

There are:

Meal replacements;
Pills;
Weight loss supplement drinks;
Too much exercise;
Eating too little (not eating disorder related);
Surgery;
Crash/Fad Dieting
and if you can think of any others.

And, if you feel they are simply not compatible with a healthy way of life; why do you think that way? Personal experience, scientific fact, media portrayal, what you read on the internet, word of mouth of others?

I can see how this can turn into a debate, fast, simply because many people here may find all of these useless or inappropriate, some may find some of these things to be wrong, and some may see nothing wrong with any of them. My only real intent is to see where some people stand, because the vibe I get here is unless you strictly eat right, within calorie range, and the right foods, you're not doing it right.

So, have at it if you wish :) If you want to add anything please do so.

Also, I completely welcome anyone's point of view, whether it be thinking all methods of weight loss are "wrong" unless you do it strictly moderate calorie restriction with the correct foods and adding in some exercise, or even if you believe weight loss meal replacements and pills are the cure all. Again, I am just looking for different peoples point of view.

I'd take surgery off that list. It's a last ditch solution, though, and I think too many people want to jump into it without knowing the risks and before making a good enough effort to lose weight in a conventional way. From what I know about it the balloon is no good, though. It's a temporary fix and if people haven't been able to lose weight without it, they'll just gain the weight right back.

Well, being nothing like any sort of professional, I'm very hesitant to call anyone out for doing things "wrong."

The only thing I am particular about, just because of my own personal experiences, is that crash dieting, via eating too little (i.e. next to nothing) and/or exercising hours and hours every single day, is not a viable long-term solution. Just because I've done it so often myself, and it's always backfired on me, whether sooner or later; and I would hate to see anyone else get sucked into it like I did!

people thought my 1500 cal 6day workouts was the wrong way to lose 130lbs 3 years ago.. and they said id put it all back on..

ERRRR wrong! still low. and now lower then ever! you gotta do what works for you and what you can maintain. however and whatever ways possible

Anything that could be dangerous to your mind or body could be the "wrong way" for me. I used to see an eating disorder therapist.(before I lost all of my weight the healthy way) I've learned quite a bit on what different people consider healthy or not. From my own experiences..laxitives are an awful idea. They completely messed up my system. I have to eat so much fiber. Diet pills and not eating...again..bad. Purging..bad. Obsessing about a number on a scale..bad. Spending hours upon hours in the gym..bad. Covering your kitchen with magazine photos so that you won't eat..bad. I think most of us know what the wrong ways to loose weight are. I wouldn't have surgery on that list though. Because if it's a life or death type situation than it's needed..now if you just have 100 lbs to loose..I don't think it's needed. That's not life or death. I'm pretty sure this whole board is full of people that can attest to that ; )

i reckon the only way you can get it wrong is any way that's going to cause you long-term damage. that can be the simplest thing from working out so much you damage yourself, to cutting a big chunk of your thigh off with a knife.
trial and error - most people find out what's the best way for them after a while.
