What do you have to say about heavy weight lifting?

I have been working out since two years and i am now in great shape guys. I just practised cardios and exercise programs. I never went for heavy weight stuff. I just carried some for my biceps aand triceps. But never for my belly and lower part. I have heard that this is somehow not good to joints in old age and has side effects.IS IT SO?
