What causes people to be so weak!

I have always wondered this. There are some people I know that are extremely weak, like below standards.

My little brother (ryan) is 5' 6 and weighs 97 pounds. He's 13 1/2 years old. Guess what his max bench is? No not 70, nope not 50 , 45 POUNDS! I know everyone has to start somewhere but that is really weak.
I think its genetic. I started benching 50 max when I was 14 1/2 ! Unbealivable isnt it? And I played Dline on my football team !

Right now (15 years old 3 monthes) my bench is 95 pounds about 4-5 reps on the 2nd second set(after my warmup set). My other little brother (matt) also benches the same amount as Ryan. Same height but weighs 130.

Anyway, it may not be genetic. My dad played Dline back in the 70s and benching 350. Weird huh? Someone explain this.....

The more you weigh, the more likely you are to be stronger. So at 97 lb, I'm not surprised taht your bro isn't benching huge amounts. But probably more important is experience. It takes a lot of time to improve, so 45 starting out is NO indication of being inherently weak.

At the end of freshman year, I was about 115 lb and could hardly do the bar (45 lb). I hadn't done ANY lifting at that point and I don't even know why I was in the weight room. But after three years (now a senior) of more and more weigh training, I've made a lot of gains. So it's all about how LONG you've been working out.

Actually, at 13, that's pretty average.
He's not going to be some hercules at that age.

I would suggest just keeping at it.
You don't get strong by just sitting around.

contraction

strenght is a result of ur body's ability to contract its muscles. no one can contract his muscles 100%. the contraction is controlled by the golgi tendon, the tendon fears that too much contraction will result in tissue tearing so it doesn't allow much of a contraction. strength is a result of muscle contraction.

I benched 100lbs at age 13 but then agian i was a fat little boy :p maybe its the weight of the person.

At that stage in life, strength is usually proportional to weight. Especially when it comes to something as objective as benching or curling. One pushup to the big kid is not equal to one pushup for the small kid. Same thing with chin-ups.

I wish I was that young again :( I remember how fast I made strength gains all those years ago. Now I live vicariously through my son. He's 14 and benches 145. He increased his bench by an even 100 lbs in 3 months.

I've been back at it since January 10th(after an 8 month layoff). I was benching 320 for 3-5 reps. Now I can barely do 2 reps at 280. I'll get there eventually though.

its mainly genetic, my brother is as strong as an ox, and he just awlks around and eats all day, he could bench like 135 or maybe more at 14. im 16 and i can bench around 190ish and ive been working out since i was 15. If my brother worked out he could be a monster he just doesnt have the discipline. Its genetic.

I'm thinking if I gained some weight I might be able to lift more. But I don't want to gain fat because I'm trying to get in shape for outside linebacker this fall.

I don't think you're in a position to find that other people are "so weak"...you started in pretty much the same area. And it's not like it was years ago, either.
