What can I do better?

Hi there,

Just after some advice on my current routine.

I'm 29 years old and I'm 65kg and want to get down to 60kg, which would be my ideal weight. I would say that I'm already fairly toned, but not as much as I'd like. I am not overweight, but just would like to lose another 5kg.

At the moment I'm going to the gym 3 days a week. I do 5 minutes warm up on the treadmill, then the weights circuit which is a full body workout and includes vibration machines. I then do 3 lots of 10 minutes on various cardio machines. Is this enough exercise?

My diet is pretty good lots of fruit and vegies and no junk. I have started to try and keep my calories to 1500 per day so I can lose these stubborn last 5kg. I have healthy cereal for breakfast, banana and diet yoghurt for morning tea, sandwich such as ham, cheese and tomato or tuna for lunch, more fruit and yoghurt for afternoon tea. And for dinner I eat whatever I cook for the family, but only have a small portion and lots of vegies.

I have just bought a protein powder stuff to mix with milk to increase the protein in my diet. Do you guys recommend this? A serving with a glass of light milk consists of 260 calories and 22.8 grams of protein. I've been having it when I get home from the gym in the morning. And sometimes before dinner so it fills me up a bit so I'm not tempted to eat too much of whatever I cook. It seems to keep me full.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Christie

it sounds like your FBW workout is working for you. The 3 different cardio machines might be improved by choosing one machine and and do 20 minutes of high intensity interval training (HIIT).

Your diet sounds healthy, but make sure you include enough protien, and like you said you added a protein drink, but I am curious what are the other macronutrients in your protein drink? 22.8g of protein equals about 91.2 calories. Where are all the other calories (260) from?

Thanks guys. I took your advice and have been doing 20minutes on one machine and then 10 on another. And I've been going fast for one minute then slow for two, then fast again. Is this what you mean by interval training? It's really hard work! But I'm buring way more calories which is great. My yoghurt and cereal are both healthy good choices. The extra stuff in my protein drink is from the milk I think. When I finish this one I might go to a sports store and see what they've got.

Protein powders are a great way to supplement your diet. If for no other reason, the convenience factor alone is worth it, as all you have to do is get a scoop of powder, put it in your shaker. When you're ready to use it, just add liquid (water or milk are the most often used), and shake. Then you're ready to roll.

As for enough exercise - if fat loss is your goal, concentrating on just moving around more when not in the gym will have a big effect on what you can lose.
