What am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone, new here and really seeking some advice. I have a 50 pound total weight loss goal, and so far I have lost 10. I am not "calorie counting" because I think it is frustrating and unnecessary when I practice self control. What I *am* watching is my sodium, sugar, cholesterol, and fat intake. I avoid alcohol, processed foods, fast food, and sugary carbonated drinks. I eat fruit and vegetables at every meal, and drink a lot of water. My exercise routine consists of 15 minutes of cardio before breakfast, and 15 minutes after dinner.
When I first started really trying to lose weight, eat better, and exercise more, I measured my waist at 33 inches. Size 12 jeans were a wee bit too tight and size 14 were a wee bit too big. A month later, I have lost 10 pounds. I measured my waist again, and it's 34 and 1/4 inches now! Size 14s are getting snug and size 12s won't even button!
I don't understand this! Why am I getting bigger when I lose weight? What am I doing wrong? :(

I know this doesn't completely address the question of getting bigger while losing weight. But you may want to try counting calories for a week, just to give yourself a baseline and to check if what you're doing is really going to lead to sustained weight loss. I used to overeat healthy food all the time.

As for the size gain, you may just need to ride it out as your body beings to adjust to losing weight.

Hey there,

I hate measuring myself, it's SO hard to make sure you're measuring the exact same spot and not pulling more or less on the measuring tape.
That being said..... I would also suggest you count your caloires. You don't have to do it forever but for one week I would. It will give you a baseline so you know for sure where you are at.
If you've lost weight but have a bigger waist I might blame it on not measuring right but since I can't know for sure it would help to count calories.

Hopfully I helped a little bit!

Good luck!!!!! Let us know what happens!

It could be possible that you are losing water weight, it happens when you take up a new eating plan. Stay there and keep exercising, you will see the fat along the waist line go down. For the record, I don't count calories either, like you I limit my food intake and avoid mindless craving and junk food.

When you said watching my sodium intake, avoiding alcohol, sodas, and processed food. You already won.

Thanks everyone :) I'm 15 pounds down and back in a comfortable size 12. I don't know what was going on, but all your suggestions seem likely (muscle gain, water weight, body adjusting, etc). Still not calorie counting, but watching fat calories more closely.
