Well...

I'm 15 years old, 5'8", and 135 pounds. I am a pretty skinny guy and looking for a bit of muscle. Not that much though. I like my trim figure, and I don't want to have to buy a whole new set of tight pants :D

How exactly do I put on about four or five pounds of muscle, and get a bit more definition (as opposed to just a flat chest, though I don't want massive biceps), without getting any bigger?

I repeat, I don't want to increase my waistline or the size of my body, but I want to change the shape a bit and convert some fat to muscle as opposed to just gaining muscle.

Anyone have some advice?

One, fat doesn't turn into muscle. If you'd like to drop your bodyfat, so be it.

But you can't gain muscle without, well, gaining muscle. Try putting on some meat first, you'll see how hard it is. You could stand to gain at LEAST fifteen lbs.

That is exactly what you have to do. It's called bulking and cutting, look more into it...

You are 15 years old, you will get bigger. It's not called bulking, it's called growing. Soon you will be getting hair in strange places and start liking girls.

If you truely don't want to get bigger, don't eat. It'll stunt your growth for sure. It will surely cause some problems further down the road, but heck, anything for looking cut at 15 years old.

You misunderstand me. Of course I want to get taller, I just don't want to have bulk up at all.

And no need to show disrespect. You make think I'm a dumb 15 year old, but I'm just here looking for advice.

To answer your question, if you want "definition", drop your bodyfat. However, the opinion of most would be that you have nothing to "define" yet. Cut if you may, you will probably realize you need to bulk at a later date.

Honestly, I think that it would be unwise to drop any more fat out of fear of being labelled "anorexic." By definiton, I mean that I want to be able to see some abs, and also some more well-defined biceps, but at the same time I don't want to increase my waistline at all.

how do you go about bulking and cutting? i've heard of this numerous times throughout these forums but never knew what it was. and seeing as this information will probably help the guy who started this thread, i figured i'd just reply with this question as appose to making a new thread.

You need to find out how many calories you need to eat for maintaining weight.

Then you eat about 250-500 calories above that to build up, 20% less than that to cut.

You won't gain in your waistline unless you 1.) Get fatter or 2.) Grow (pelvic girdle).

Bodybuilders walk around with 30 inch waists. The just have 30 inch legs, too.

You've got little muscle on you right now. Just work out and eat right. You're going to get bigger. And by bigger, I mean, more defined. You can't see what you don't have.

K, thanks for all the help :)

I'm thinking about what kinds of lifting to do, but I don't know what to start with

The bicep curls (I think that's what they're called with the biceps) sound attractive to me, but what else should I do?

For the record, I'm mainly looking for more strength and to get more muscle tone in my arms. I could use a bit more definition in my stomach, chest, and pectorals, but not too.

And once I reach a certain strength, and I don't want to get any bigger, how do I maintain it? Will I lose the muscle tone I built up if I just stop working out?

I'm still kind of confused, I don't want to bulk up at all. I just want a bit of definition.

But getting 'defined' involves having enough lean muscle mass so that when you cut the fat through diet, the muscle shows off nicely.

if you don't have enough lean mass, you look scrawny, not defined.

thus we bulk up muscle, then lean out the fat...rinse and repeat.

and yes, if you stop working out, you'll slowly lose the muscle you built up.
