I could easily go through a 12 pack of Diet Coke in 2 days- i went cold turkey off diet Coke and now drink nothing but water, soymilk and orange juice instead- I feel so much better- I didnt realize all cola does is dehydrate a body- Plus it might have wrecked my teeth, as 2 fillings recently fell out......
What other effects can diet cola have on the body? Just becuase its 'diet' doesn't mean its good for the body...

I logged in just to say-- GOOD FOR YOU!! ;)

Besides rotting your teeth, most diet sodas contain aspartame which destroys the brain. Google: apsartame dangers .. and see for yourself!

Welcome to the club!

I've gone from a two cokes a day to about two a week. I feel better not drinking coke as well and I'm starting to get less enjoyment from drinking it.

Your teeth will really be thanking you. Coke is so bad that my dentist recommends not brushing for 30 minutes after drinking a soda. Rather just swish water mouth in the mouth at first. And if you have to have a soda, opt for Sprite.

If you get a craving for carbonation, check out Izze. It's 70% juice and 30% sparkling water. A can has 80 calories - not zero like Diet Coke, but it has ingredients that are actually good for you.

Good god- I had no idea- i just looked it up online, and I have many of the symtoms of the damage that can be caused by apsartame-which i always attributed to my weight and diet- I used to have a very sharp and clear mind- now i feel like i have ADD half the time, and struggle just to focus my thoughts- I attributed that to my weight- could it actually be a result of all the Diet coke i consumed? I also think i used to have subtle dislexia, but now its worse than ever, with my misreading words and making typos-which is apparently another symptom of apsartame damage..

Also I think Diet Coke may be a reason why my blood pressure is up....

I'd do somthing so stupid-during and after my long distance walks, rather than have water, I'd suck down a few Diet Cokes...

Diet coke actually dehydrates a person, which is why its easy to drinl one after another...

Im off diet cola for GOOD- What should I eat or drink now, to hopefully heal myself from whatever damage I may have caused?

matt, congrats on quitting!
How do you physically feel since your quit? Any change in your ability to concentrate, energy or overal health?
I used to get bad migranes- I think the Diet coke was the culprate...

I think the drink is designed to leave a person dehydrated, so they will drink one after another....

When I first started dieting I was taking in so much artificial stuff. Then I began looking up the ingredients and that's how I found out about aspartame... and the list goes on!

Hey, I also kicked my diet coke addiction a couple of months ago. I will admit I have had a few here and there but, nothing, not even close to what I was like when I used to drink one 5-6 times per day, everyday!!!!

Now I opt for water, crystal light, or iced tea. I drink a lot of iced tea, without sugar or any sweetner actually. I really like the taste of unsweetened iced tea with lemon and lots of ice. I do drink some crystal light, and I know it has some aspartame in it, I think.

I kicked my Diet Coke habit in 5 Days

I have been a 7 plus can or sometimes bottle of Diet Coke drinker a day for many years. I have tried many times to kick the habit, but all without success. As soon as I tried to cut down my body would react with mood swings, migraines, and overall just feeling terrible, so I had to return to drinking it. That was until just five days ago. A friend of mine, Bill, knew how much of the stuff I was drinking and knew how bad I felt when I tried to kick this habit and brought me something that has replaced my addiction once and for all. In 5 days I broke my habit without any withdrawls, side affects, headaches, nothing, and feel like a new man. You can read all you want about the goods and the bads of Diet Coke, but when your body tells you something, generally it is for a reason. If anyone wants to break the habit without withdrawls, email me at mikewitt@drinkactweb.com or check out my site,

Thanks, Mike

I stopped drinking diet soda a few months ago. I used to go through a couple of 2-Liter bottles a day. I had no idea why my teeth were in such bad shape when I have never had much of a sweet tooth, But after reading some stuff on the net about about the acids in soda, I quit cold turkey and now drink mostly water.

Soda cans have a thin lacquer lining on the inside to prevent the acids from chewing through the can. :ack2:

I definitely don't drink that much diet soda, maybe a can a day. But at the most it might be 2. I have really good teeth. The only cavities I ever had was when I was a little girl and probably didn't brush as well -- before I even knew what diet soda was (and I only have 2 fillings.) Guess I'm just posting to be a bit of a "devil's advocate." :D I do know that the acid in your stomach will take care of the soda. As far as the pic, the url seems to be from some place in Bulgaria? So I'm not sure how accurate it is.

There is a lot of information out on the net that just isn't true and you really have to sift through it. I know aspartame isn't a health food, but it's not been proven to cause any damage. Those studies are done with agendas and the "side effects" that aspartame supposedly causes, well that's a long list and I'm sure every one of has experienced part of that list without indulging in aspartame.

It sounds like the OP was drinking quite a bit of diet soda, and anything in that huge quantity would have an effect on anyone's body.

Congrats on kicking soda!!

I work for a marketing company promoting the new Snapple Antioxidant Waters. Im not a soda drinker either but I really do enjoy these drinks and I thought you might be interested too. Im an athlete and love having an Acai AOX water after a run.

good for you!!!!

I have only had 3 this week, down from around 6 a day. Not only is it costly, I just felt like i was addicted. I can see I am not the only one. Its hard, especially around meal times. One day at a time.. lmao

Jesus Christ! That pretty much did it for me. No more D Coke for me.

potassium and sodium "destroying" your bones!!!!???? Even if there was a truth to that, soda drinks have very low contents of both.

I think he means the phosphorus (from the phosphoric acid in cola.) However, again, they don't really have a true study to prove this. I guess it could happen if you are just drinking soda and nothing else (as in milk or other calcium fortified products.) But who really knows until they do true studies.

Basically, that theory of soda leeching calcium from your bones is based on nutritional fact. However, just like John Henry and Paul Bunyan, it has been severely inflated.

In your small intestine you have similar receptor sites that are responsible for calcium and phosphorus uptake. These two macrominerals exist in an antagonistic state. In other words, if you have too much of one it inhibits the uptake of the other. Most animals require a 2:1 ratio of Ca:p. It takes a tremendous amount of either over a prolonged period of time to cause problems.

That said, diet soda contains trace amounts of phosphorus in the form of phosphoric acid. (That picture more than likely contains and extremely high molar concentration of the acid before it becomes immensely diluted.) You get more phosporus from a single chicken nugget than entire case of cola. Hell, water has trace amounts of phosphorus in it.

Don't get me wrong. If you want to quit drinking it then that is an amazing accomplishment and I applaud your will power. However, scaring people into a course of action (avoiding soda) is hardly ethical if evidence can show the contrary.

I am not as knowledgeable about aspartame, but I would be interested in seeing a medical journal article showing the stated adverse brain effects.

Diet Sodas and Aspartame

I agree that it is very confusing out there on all of this information. I too am not an expert or doctor but I can tell you that large amounts of diet soda, or regular soda, a day over a long period of time does take a toll on you. After I kicked my 10 year addiction I have been reading all over the net about people in the same shoes as I was. Anywhere from 7-12 cans a day for many years. The thing that shocked me the most was the symptoms that they all talk about where the same as I was having, headaces, migraines, jitterness, fatigue, joint pain and so forth. I didn't plan on becoming addicted, it just happened over time and the longer it went the more I drank. I tried over and over but the symptoms of withdrawal were really strong for me and maybe I was wimp, but it is a very tough thing to break for some people. I don't believe everything I read on the internet but I do believe my body and what it tells me and I do believe my doctor, for the most part. I broke my habit by accident in 5 days and never had a withdrawal symptom yet and feel like a new man. It is night and day how I feel. I don't mind sharing my story, if it can help others break the habit as well,
Thanks,
Mike
