Hey all. I joined this site while just kinda perusing the web about a month or so ago. I just joined with a gym today, and so am here for all the support and advice that I can get from any of you.
I just turned 38. I am currently 6'1" and 250 lbs. I've been a 1-2 pack a day smoker for about 18 years now (haven't had a cigarette since Jan. 1 this year.... but I am smoking cigars, which I plan on quitting here in about another month or two). No lectures on the smoking please, as I know me, and I have to be 100% ready to quit in order for it to work for me.
While my job does consist of quite a bit of physical labor, it is low-level physical stuff (pushing a shop broom, climbing ladders, quite a bit of walking, etc.). I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, basically. I figure that if I can lose 3 lbs. a week, that by June 1 of this year, I can be down to around 210 lbs., which is about right for me.
My girlfriend and I joined a 24-hour gym close to our apartment this afternoon (the 24 hour thing is important for me, as I work a swing shift with alternating shifts between days and nights). We plan on going for a "break-us-in" thing this afternoon... just some easy time on the treadmills and get used to the equipment there... no big workout today.
Last month, I started to focus on changing my diet.... began to eat at least 7-10 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Beginning March 1, I plan on focusing on smaller portions and less snacks, etc.
I am focused on losing weight, but would love to get back the tone and eventually a little size in my arms and chest..... but weightloss is first and foremost on my mind right now.
Any tips, guidelines, etc. that any of you have for those of us trying to get back into the workout routine would be greatly appreciated and really helpful. I hope to come back here on an almost daily basis for the next months. I hope I don't annoy anybody with what I'm sure will be some pretty novice and probably "stupid" questions for those who have focused on here for some time already.
Thanks in advance, and wish me and my girlfriend luck!!!!
