hay all, my names dave and im 25

i worked in retail for most of my life but when i finished my degree got an office job, i threw on weight faster than santa on christmas night (thought id be topical :D)

i went from around 182pds to just over 235pds. keep in mind im a 6'3" male so 182 was ok not perfect but ok.

i then found out i had a condition called cystic fibrosis which turned out to be the least of my problems, soon after, i developed arthritis in multiple joints worst in both knees.

i lost my office job and gained a few more pounds(stones). so now at 155pds iv decided enough is enough.

i know i sound like a lost cause, but if anyone can recommend some exercises for someone who can walk but not much, can breath but not much (seriously) and has all the time in the world (im still unemployed) please fire away.

on a diet note, I'm no angel but I'm better than most, my meals are usually pretty healthy, i only really eat chicken (meat wise) and LOVE my veg, and snack on fruit, nuts and seeds. my weakness being carbs especially pasta and cheese, i tend to over do those a bit.

i don't drink much alcohol (maybe 1 glass of wine OR 1 bottle of beer a week) and obviously don't smoke (damn it [words of an ex-smoker])

anyway im making a new year resolution of sorts to get myself fit again, cos at the current rate of progress ill be dead after not too long, extra weight means extra weight on my lungs, Cystic fibrosis doesn't like that.

well that's my life story, hope to see you on the forums

Have you thought about swimming? It is very low impact, and the water helps bouy you? Just a thought. Welcome. And Good luck!

that was my first idea if im honost, however my local pool (the only one within a large distance) uses several time the amount of adviced chlorine i think, unfortunatly, due to my CF it basically suffocates me.

I thought Scousers were supposed to be tough! Swim across the Mersey lol

It sounds like your issue with weight may be down to portion control as much as anything.
My weaknesses are cheese and crisps. I don't know when to stop with either of them. An fizzy drinks too. So they're all out of my diet.

Portion control and add an apple or banana if you get hungry beyond the regular meals

Oh, that is terrible. All I can think is try and monitor your caloric intake to get some of the weight off. I don't know if you are watching calories, but it might help. And just set limited goals for exercise, that you feel you can accomplish. I am no professional, and I am not very familiar with CF. Maybe try yoga? I know a lot of people enjoy it, and done correctly it can help with weight control and flexibility.... Just a shot in the dark.

thanks for the kind welcome, im actually going to start doing some yoga (thanks for the tip jweeks22) i think ill try starting a diary or something.

the main issue i think im going to run into is going to be motivation, hence the joining of this site :D

thanks again for the welcome and ill keep you up to date.

Hi and welcome.

I would say that walking can definitely be a good form of exercise. There are several people on here who have lost weight just walking - check out Omega's diary for inspiration on that. She's lost over 100 lbs just with walking and calorie control.

Also I'd check with your doctor about what kind of resistance exercise you can do - if you can do any weight lifting and body resistance work, that would help you maintain muscle. I know that CF has it's own set of challenges, so I'm not really comfortable recommending anything specifically, since I have no formal training in this.

As far as diet, the first thing I'd suggest is registering for a free account on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

I'd also suggest starting a diary in the weight loss diary area (Weight Loss Diary - Weight Loss Forum) as well as reading and participating in other diaries. This is a good way to make updates to your progress and to get support from others. It helps to find the diaries of people who have successfully lost weight (or are losing weight) and reading through them as well. Following the diaries of those who have been successful is both inspiring and informative.

Finally, I'd say you should read as much as you can of the posts on the board, especially anything that's marked "sticky". There is a ton of good information around here and a lot of times questions that new folks have has already been answered very thoroughly - so do take the time to look around and read. :)

Hope that helps you to get started.
