Weights for burning fat?

Hi,

I saw an article in my local paper recently that listed the types of
exercises and the amount of calories they burn in an hour. 'High Resistance
aerobics' was first, and weights were second: far above treadmill and bike
work.

I did my cardio days (20 mins walk, 20 bike, 20 low-impact stepper) on the
assumption that it was the best way to burn fat. Is what I'm doing less
effective than weight days for losing weight (fat)? I will still have to
have cardio days to split the weight days, but should I consider changing
the format of my days, perhaps doing an hour on the stepper instead of 3x20
minutes on different machines?

Thanks for any help.

indeedy, hitting the weights for 45 minutes burns some fat up GOOD! not only that but it builds muscle which will in turn burn more fat.

i'm not really big on HIT or HIIT but if you want to lose fat I'm pretty sure it the best way to exercise. although the reps are very high you may gain some muscular size along with it, hopefully that will point you in a direction and someone with more HIIT knowledge can help you.

good luck
mike

ps what are your exercise goals?

Thankyou heaps for yor reply.

I think that this information is something that should be given to more newbies. I was under the impression that lifting weights burned NO fat, only cardio exercises did. The personal trainer at my gym who gave me my program didn't help to fix this misconception.

My exercise goal is definitely to get bigger and stronger, but first I have to lose a bit of excess fat (probably 7kg..I think that's like 15 pounds).

Could you briefly tell me what HIT and HIIT is? I gather it's something to to with high impact training, but I thought that that would mean something like the step machine. However, you said 'reps', so it must be weight training. So weight training (in HIT/HIIT form) is the BEST way for someone to burn off unwanted fat?

Calories do not equal Fat :)

You won't burn fat during weightlifting, not very much more than usual at least, because fat is such a slow-release energy source that it's not suited to high-intensity activity like weightlifting.

Though it may not FEEL like it, cardio is a low-intensity activity - you're limited by your oxygen capacity before you're able to get anywhere near your energy limits. After about 20 minutes of cardio, however, your body is producing about 50% of its energy from fats. That is why cardio is better for losing body fat than weightlifting. When you lift weights, you burn primarily carbohydrates. When you do cardio, you're running on carbs AND fats.

Thanks for the information Fil.
So cardio IS the best for burning fat. I find all of this information erally hard to penetrate as a beginner. Also, it seems like everyone tells me different things.
I was looking at that book "Burn the fat, Feed the Muscle", have you heard of it and if so, is it worth a read?
Thanks

Damn Fil, nice facts. I thought that HIIT was the best way to burn in terms of exercise. I've heard from so many places that sports like basketball and lacrosse and soccer burn fat the best because it is stop and then sprint.

Actually Origination, if you really want to let fat drip off your body I recommend a diet as well. I have found one that I like but most people aren't cool with it. I'd follow Fil's advice, but keep the weight training as well and get a good diet and you'll be sound as hound.
