Weightraining first or cardio first?

What is better and healthy for the body and muscles? Some people say cardio and some people say weightraining. I have never really done weightraining before cardio though and never had a problem, but its all about the health and whats best.

Weight training before cardio.

It just depends on how your body responds during your workout, I have always done some light cardio before lifting just to warm up and my lengthy cardio afterwards.

In all the fitness classes, running is always first. I think cardio is first before weightraining. muscles can get tired if weightraining first.

don't make me go back and find a study.. cardio after lifting burns more calories. and lifting before cardio allows you to properly use your glycogen stores on anaerobic, intense exercise. :p

have a protein shake in between, and you'll see even more benefits.

I usually do cardio before weight lifting (just because I'm forced to.) I lift after school, but first have cross counry (which just ended.) and I have track in a few weeks. So I really can't lift before cardio. I still found that I've been able to increase my muscle and decrease my fat quite a bit.

It is ok to do cardio before lifting if you have like a few hours in between. You can't do lifting if you just have finished your cardio session. I am also forced to do cardio before lifting.

winner!!

also, light cardio to warm up for weights....why? how is cardio ANYTHING like weight training? how can it actually warm up your joints through a full range of motion?

it can't. do it if you like, but you'll still need 1-2 warm up sets with weights anyways...so why tack on 5-10 mins of light cardio beforehand?

if anything, invest in a dynamic stretching video (like Magnificent Mobility) and do that first to warm up.

my body conditioning/physical fitness teacher makes us do cardio before weightlifting and then when we meet back into the room after 25 minutes of cardio, we do a bunch of sit ups, twists, some bycicles sometimes, and push ups. After that we do weightraining.

I think this is what I am going to do because we have choices to go into the fitness center, run around the school, or run around the track until our meet up time... I will forget the running and do weightraining in the morning and then I will run later on my own at around 3:30pm (after I am done with my math class) monday/wednesdays. My body conditioning/physical fitness class is in the morning.

I will try this new routine and see if it works better. If it does, I'll keep it. If not, I will go back to cardio first. I can be able to do what I want during the time we are suppose to do cardio unless the professor is in the same room doing cardio in the same room as I'm in (in the fitness center, there are cross trainers, steppers, bikes, and treadmill).

If you're going to:

- Be using the same muscles (ie, a leg day for lifting and your cardio is running).
- You care about building significant strength
- And you must do lifting and cardio in the same session

...then do the lifting first.

If your goal is mainly fat loss or performance for a sport then there's a good argument for doing cardio (or sport) first. But you can successfully do this by hitting the weights first too.

i prefer to do 10mins on a cross trainer to warm up the whole body muscles etc, then i do 1 warm up set ...

I am so used to the cardio first and then weightraining. I have never had a problem being tired doing weightraining after cardio. I could do it for one day and see how it works out (weightraining first..in the morning all I would have time for is that) and then cardio later on after my last class (I have no time in-between classes to run except for lunch time, which I need to eat (hungry).

One good thing about monday is that my 2nd class after my fitness class is going to be let out 1 hour earlier, so I can try this monday only to see if it works me better. I am stiff usually after my 2nd class because we are in one spot (drawing art class).

I personally wouldn't stick the two together. I mean.. It's great to have a quick run/elliptical/etc to warm up before you stretch and lift, but for optimal energy levels you would be better off not running before you lift. And doing cardio post workout has some potential issues as well. When you are done lifting your body is usually in a catabolic state, so running will simply accerate the break down of muscle tissue for amino acids. IMO, if you MUST do them in the same day, I wouldn't stick them together for these reasons. My 2 cents.

Gary Roberts the NHL player is a health FREAK and he usually takes over the ojb of the team trainer for the personal training of the team cause he knows more. But I read an interview at my hockey training place a couple of years ago and he said there is absolutely no point in doing strength training after cardio. The whole point of cardio is to get your heart rate up and push your body so that your don't fatigue as fast. If you tire your muscles out doing cardio then you'll have nothing left for weight training.

okay - monday I'll do the weightraining in the morning (class is at 7:30am) and then I'll run later on at 4pm.
