weight training

I would like to know how much weight to start lifting with and when do I know I am actually working the muscles and not just going through the motions.

You're the only one that can answer either of those questions. you just have to pickup some weights, and start moving them, to see if they're too heavy, too light, or just right.

don't worry if you're curling 10lbs and the woman next to you is curling 25lbs. its not about her...or how you compare to her...its about what you can do now, and what you're working towards.

you'll know you're working the muscles because you'll feel it. the slight burning at the end of the set...the slight stiffness the next day.

malkore is right, you just need to pick up weights and figure out what is to heavy or light for yourself and you will be able to figure out what weight is right for your desired sets and reps. You could also perform one-rep maxes for different excercises, but only if you know how to do them safely and correctly and then take percentages of that 1RM for your workout sets and reps. You will be able to tell it is working when you get the burning at the end of the set and the muscle soreness the next day. Another good way to make sure it is working is to take each set to volitional muscle fatigue or if you are able to, perform each set to failure, where you can't lift anymore, so you know you are giving your max effort each set and getting the max results.

Do you have any experience lifting, or are you just starting out?

If you are brand new, then how many pounds to lift is only one small thing among many things to line out.

Lifting the weight correctly is more important than lifting the correct weight.

Assuming you know how to lift, I agree with Malkore.

Get your technique correct on all the major (or compound) exercises.

Squats
Bench Press
Deadlifts or Romanian Deadlifts
Military Press
Bent-over-rows/Inverted Rows
Lunges

Once your form is perfect; you will be way ahead of the game. Get a trainer if you have to. I used to think I knew everything until I gotten a trainer. He showed me the correct technique, taught me about progression, how I generally should eat etc.

Also look at these sites for more info. T-nation.com and Bodybuilding.com (the training and nutrition articles with many others) and of course the stickies.
