Weight training with dumbbells

I'd like to start some weight training soon.

We used to have a home gym, but it was ancient and never used, so I dismantled it. The weights however are still there. I'm pretty sure that using the barbells without the proper equipment is a no go, but what about the dumbbells? Are there any exercises that I can do with them without the need for any additional equipment?

I had a snoop around, but even the weight training for beginners guides and things like that are more centred around lifting barbells and utilizing a gym. I don't have the money for that, so I have to make the best out of what I have at home.

If anybody could lead me into the right direction or give me some tips on what I could do with those dumbbells, I'd appreciate it! :)

i <3 dumbells

You can pretty much do anything with a barbell or dumbbell.

curls, bench (flat, incline, decline) shoulder press, rows, tricep extension, lunges, shrugs, front, side, and bent over lateral raises. you can use a low weight dumbbell to add resistance to your crunches. or put a light one between your feet and use it as resistance for leg raises. all kinds of things can be done!

I agree with Mike.

Dumbbells are probably the most versatile weight training tool. You can do pretty much anything with them. And you don't need a gym or any fancy benches or anything (although those do add to your repertoire).

Right now, dumbbells are the only weight training tool I am using. My set only goes up to 30lbs, though, and when I exhaust those I am either going to have to buy more stuff or start going to the gym.

Dumbbells rule!

yeah i think the only time i dont use them is on leg day, its just a barbell type thing on those days. but you can do lunges with some. trust me, you will feel it in the morning tho. ouch.

I actually have done a couple of programs with all DB leg exercises. Of course if you are trying to gain muscle mass than you might need some pretty heavy DB's.

But for fat loss, I've been able to do plenty of workouts just with DB's.
