Hi there Jenny,

I have just joined this forum in the last week and have found it to be a great thing, I have lost 4lb in my first week by doing the following...

1) Upper my exercise slightly
2) Not eating much after 6pm
3) Cutting out bad foods from my diet (white bread, crisps, sweets, fizzy juice and cakes)
4) Eating healthier alternatives such as brown bread, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, cereal bars and pieces of fruit or raw veg for snacks.
5) Eating breakfast (even if it is only a piece of fruit)
6) Drinking lots of water

Maybe you could give us a sample of what you're eating and what you do for exercise and we could suggest something!:)

Hi

I have been doing a lot of reading and talking to people on the issue of weight loss, why we continue to have a difficulty with it and how to be successful at it, my conclusion is that a lot of the answer is in how we see ourselves and what we tell ourselves along with an appreciation for what food is to us and the role it plays in our lives.

Food is a big part of how we feel emotionally - because as a newborn baby food and love & safety go hand in hand at your mothers breast, celebrations like birthdays are set around food and cake, as we get older this is more entrenched with the bigger celebrations also being encased in food eg weddings, graduations, Christmas, Easter, funerals, all major celebrations of who we are and how great we are (or were) include food and often not the healthiest of foods like the celebratory cake! The lollipop to take the pain away, the sweet treat for being good these are all firmly entrenched in our psyche, fun and food are closely linked. No wonder weight loss can be hard and seen as depravation!

I think we all have our reasons for being overweight, conscious and unconscious ones, the thing that I believe is the first step and the ongoing motivator is the 'why', why do I want to lose weight? We are all motivated by either pain or pleasure, I think that when we are motivated by pain we move faster, there is more urgency to achieve.

For me losing weight is a pleasure thing, I want to lose weight in order to look and feel better along with having more energy. Even as I write this I can see that my reasons are pretty tame, no wonder I am up & down!! I also believe that if I succeed in my weight loss then other areas in my life will be more successful.

Getting the reason and the motivation clear and closing the back door ie not giving ourselves an out (I am good at this one!) is a step often not explored and one that will prevent success.

Hmm enough of my ramblings.

Heh, Jenni...you sound much like me. I've always been around 120 and one day I woke up and had gained 25 pounds.. I've just joined in this forum and am trying to shed 30 or so pounds for good. My biggest problem is not that I eat unhealthy meals...it's all the snacking. I will eat really well the whole day and then munch away at night on awful things. You know I think sometimes people make it more complex than it needs to be, especially with trendy diets and such. All you have to do is take care of your body the way it needs to be taken care of. Excercise, eat healthy (that doesn't mean boring!), and WATER. Allow yourself to splurge once in awhile..you deserve it. But don't make it a habit to go back to that over and over again. My biggest challenge has been finding healthy foods that I LIKE. You have to be willing to try things though...I just recently had pineapple for the first time...and YUM. I also found out that I really really like chicken which I cook on the George Foreman. There are tons of healthy foods out there, and I'm sure you'll be able to find things that you really do like. The key is sticking to it. That's why I gained all this weight. I'd go through periods where I'd exercise..feel good, and then stop altogether. And suddenly I'm 130 lbs...then 140 lbs..and so on. And make it fun! Get a friend to join an aerobics class with you, or heck go join one yourself and make new friends! Or if you're like me and like working out alone, force yourself to make time to do your workouts. Figure out which times work best for you. Weight loss is not easy but it's totally worth it! Happy losing!
