Weight loss, Through simply not eating??

Hi everyone,

About 8 days ago I tried to lose weight by simply, not eating anything. When I wake up I have a glass of water, then I do not eat anything until around 6PM, when I come home, What I eat would usually be a light dinner, consisting of vegetables, maybe some beef or fish, and maybe some rice or pasta. This being not in huge amounts, but a normal --> small sized portion (less than I usually take for 1 meal). Then I do not eat anything for the rest of the day, before I go to sleep maybe a low fat yogurt. I do not feel tired, I feel hungry in the morning for around a few hours, then the feeling of hunger goes, I still drink a small amount of water if I feel I really need it. I do around 30-40 minutes walking a day and some exercises when I go home. Some people have said this is not a healthy way to lose weight, and some people have told me that it is perfectly viable if executed correctly.

Has anyone tried this dieting method before? Can I improve anything?

I have lost so far 5KG

No offense.

But I think that's the silliest, most stupid idea I've heard in a long while.

You know it's not healthy. But you do it anyway.

Might as well throw some cigarettes in there too. There aren't any calories in them.

I'm usually more tolerable of ignorance. But that's when it's really ignorance. When someone does something that they know isn't right or healthy.... I don't have the patience to wade through the BS.

Hi,

Care to explain?
Exactly how is this form of weight loss not healthy, and to what extent?
I understand that some weight lost using this method may be lean tissue, however, I really dont see how it is so dangerous. Please explain =)

Thank you.

Has it ever crossed your mind that there may be a 'baseline' of nutrients required to sustain basal functioning and health?

What you're doing is fine if, as you said, it's executed properly. That proper execution includes supervision by a medical professional. I've been on a similar diet, but it included nearly daily check-ins with a doctor. It was also only something to do for about a week.

There's nothing wrong with an occasional fast, either, but you really can't make not eating a basic lifestyle.

What Steve said - retardedly immature to starve yourself and then later on go around saying "oh i wonder why im having trouble with xxx and yyy"

In general, any weight loss you will accomplish through starving yourself to death is not sustainable. You will gain everything back the second you stop the diet.

In addition, your metabolism will slow down as a result of the massive reduction in calorie intake. This means that not only will your body start processing calories less frequently (meaning that the you will be able to eat even less food before you reach the amount at which you start gaining weight), but it will also go into starvation mode (since your body doesn't know when its next meal is coming, it will try to store as much energy as possible in the form of fat to prepare for a possible starvation regime).

Finally, as you keep dieting like that, you will eventually start losing muscle in addition to water weight. The water weight you will easily gain back, but the muscle tissue you won't (which will make it even more difficult for you to control your weight in the future, since lower muscle mass means slightly lower metabolism).

In short, don't do it - combine exercise and diet (I know, I know, you've probably heard it a million times).

Take it from me - I was once on a diet where I was eating 500 calories a day (I wrote an account of it, in fact). I lost about 10 kilos after 30 days - and I gained that back within a month or two after stopping the diet (and I felt really lousy in the meantime).

Sorry to dash your hopes,
George

Simply NOT EATING will make you lose weight yes but it's NOT the healthiest approach. Please continue to take in your daily nutrients...Just change WHAT you eat...Broaden your spectrum of intake and be more active on a day to day basis...you don't have to ride to every destination...Lifestyle change helps you lose weight effectively...NOT starving yourself...come on...You'll leave yourself open to infections of all sorts...TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY PLEASE...IT'S THE ONLY ONE YOU HAVE.

a more polite way to explain

Hi, some of these post have probably put you on the defence but here is more of a medical reason of why it isnt the best way to loose weight. First when you are not getting enough nutriian your body then loses weight b/c it is taking away muscle mass(muscle weighs more than fat). Also when you do eat your body is more likely to absorb other fats and things you do not need b/c it is in a starvation mode. Thus when you think you are losing weight it really is an increase in fat and reduction in muscle. When you lose muscle you also slow down your metabolism. It would be better to eat in the morning than in the evening anyhow. You will burn what you eat during the day. What you eat at night is absorbed and digested slower. When you dont eat your body does a lot of crazy things. I would research metabolism, and nutrician supplements if you do deciede to continue this form of "diet". God Bless and good luck on your weight loss.:beating:

That was quite possibly the furthest thing from a 'medical explanation' I've seen in quite some time.

Hello again everyone =)

I visited my doctor today to consult him (for the 2nd time) about my diet. I have been on it for so far, 2 weeks, and I plan to extend 2 more weeks. I have lost so far 13KG. My doctor said all my functions were pretty normal, however, he said that alot of the weight will be gained again if I return to eating fatty foods as I did before, and that I should return to a fully healthy low fat diet for a while after I finish. As I said earlier, I combine no-food mornings with light - moderate exercise, that is, brisk walking 30mins-1 hour, and lifting a while after I eat.

So far I have not experienced any negative repercussions, although there are side effects some people kindly (or not so) explained above.

Your doctor is a moron.

Dietary fat doesn't make you fat and has nothing to do with why you'll gain the weight back.

Get a clue.

Reminds me of a story I once heard. There was a milk man, new to business who relied on his ox to pull his milk cart. However, the ox ate a great deal of grain, which cut deeply into his profits. After putting up with this for some months he came up with a plan. Each day he would reduce the animals feel by one cup.

The first day the ox didn't even notice, the man was satisfied. By the end of the first week the animal was irritable, but managed his work well enough. The milkman was happily saving money, and each day he simply held back another cup, giddy with joy at the money he was saving.

The plan worked great until the ox died!

Joking aside, what I wonder, is what is wrong with determining the number of calories you need to slowly and methodically lose weight and distributing them among 4 - 6 small meals so you are never overly hungry and so that your blood sugar level stays constant?

It has worked for numerous people on this forum, why meddle with success?

Can you improve anything? Is this a trick question?

Other people have had success on this "diet"....it's called "anorexia" and is a serious eating disorder. I hope you consult medical help for it, your doctor doesnt seem too concerned with it....which is odd.

The only thing I never understand is I don't know anyone who eats this little and is successful at losing weight and keeping it off. There are lots of healthy alternatives out there that are proven to work.

This type of diet will shed weight. Especially if you can get your mind off of food. However, it will put your body into starvation mode, and any increase in your caloric intake is going to stick to you like glue. For any great length of time, this could create a permanent metabolic change or at least create a chronic disposition to entering into starvation mode.

The funny (and tragic) thing about this type of plan is that the first times you do it, it will work magic. After all, not only are you never replenishing your glycogen stores, but you also strip your body of fat and muscle.

However, if you don't want to do some serious and possibly long-term damage, spread those 1-2 meals across 4-5 meals during the day. This prevents binging. If you workout, ingest protein/carbs before your workout (it need not be much) and protein right after the workout and you can maintain your muscle mass. Youll look a lot better, you'll still lose weight, and you have a smaller chance of screwing over your metabolism.
