Weight loss though walking?

Ok im only 25 and i know i should be lifting hard and running, well i went from 240 down to 185 doing that, then i had an injury about 10 months ago and there still not 100% on what it is. Also im having back problems and join problems in both elbows and problems with my right knee. Also when i run im getting bad hip problems, either way im dieing to get back at it and get into shape but same thing i start i start to get broke down and i have to take time off.

basically what i can do that doesn't hurt is walking, if i walk at 4.0 for 45-60 every morning, is that good for losing weight? i know running is a lot better but i can't do it.

also i know heavy lifting is the key, but that breaks me down a lot, would it be worth it for me to do a few higher rep light lifts 3 days a week before my cardio or would i be wasting my time there?

(thanks, and please about the heath probs im still going to drs. about them so im not worried about them on here right now, im just wanting to know abou the benifits of walking thank you)

Losing weight is a function of expending more calories than you consume or consuming less calories than you expend.... depending on how you like to put it.

Walking expends calories.

When combined with all the other caloric outputs, they outweigh the caloric inputs..... presto!

You have yourself withdraw from the fat bank.

To add, no one exercise is "the key."

Let's see - over the past 21 months - and being a middle aged female which is supposed to make it harder for me - i've lost close to 200lbs from a reasonable diet and walking as my primary form of exercise... (along with weight lifting)

For walking though, if you're on a treadmill - I'd change up intensity on the speed and incline - and not keep it at a steady state... as long as you get your heart rate going - it's good...

This is your second post - the questions you're asking have been asked and answered quite frequently around here - Spend some time reading the stickied threads.... they contain a lot of good info you can use...

First of all, congrats on your weight loss! I am sorry to hear about your injury. I agree with Steve.

Can you ride a bicycle? That will help tons too :)

some reason the bike and an elliptical hurts my knee, i actually think doing so much on the elliptical is what hurt my knee, that and 3 years in the army really broke me down. really pisses me off cause im not lazy at all i would love to be in the gym every day working hard but my body won't allow me.

Have you been tested for things?

At your age.... there aren't many reasons outside of disease that you should be in this much pain.

Well I'd get a second opinion.

I've been beating the piss out of my body for years and sure, I've got aches and pains..... but my body is functional.

yeah i made the bottom part of that thread for a reason,

but yes ive been to tons of drs. in the last 10 months had herina sugery had every test i know of done, i think ive been to 9+ drs. i think running in boots with a ruck sack on messed my legs up, crashing dirtbikes messed my back up, i have no idea what messed up my right elbow lol

Tough man.... sorry to hear that.

Well what I said above remains fact.

<that's my 9000th post on this forum, lol>

Congratulations on your lofty # of postings Steve - thanks for all the good, sound advice you give around here!

As for running v. walking...
I have lost my weight strictly by watching what I eat and using my treadmill daily. I have it set on the steepest incline, and alternate between walking and running on it. But even prior to the running, I found it a great help in losing the weight.

Also, as for painful joints, what works for me is 2 Tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar every day. Some think it is bunk, but I started taking it after a nasty bout of shingles (I was hospitalized with this) and found that it relieved my pain very quickly. It is supposed to help with inflammation. I mix it with a little honey and some hot water and pretend it is nasty tea. Cinnamon helps a little. But it is a cheap remedy! Just make sure to brush your teeth right after, as vinegar is so acidic.

if you could get access to an indoor pool i would try swimming, as long as your doctor thinks its okay. i have a ton of pain too. i totally understand being 25 and feeling like your 70.
