Weight loss shakes?

I want to know if any of those shakes that replace a meal actually fill you up? (or make you not hungry)I'm thinking of drinking a shakes to replace lunch. I don't really have time to eat lunch, and I still want to keep my calorie intake up.

If by "those shakes" you mean something like slim fast, DON'T. Those things are absolute crap. Have you ever read the ingredients or looked at the nutrition facts on the back of them? It taste like yummy chocolate milk because that's essentially what it is, with sugar and all.

Make your own meal replacement drinks. fruit smoothies are pretty great. But there's a whole list of verities of drinks you could make. All you need is a blender. But whatever you do, there are about 10000000 options that are just as fast and 1000000 healthier than those store bought meal replacement drinks.

I've been using this Naturade Bravarian Chocolate soy protein mix weight loss meal replacement thing :D (sooo many adjectives lol) and it's been good for me. It has a lot of vitamins so you feel refreshed after drinking it and it keeps me full 3-4 hours. I like the way slim fast tastes better and am thinking of trying it to see if it fills me any, this one tastes like prepared cake mix before you bake it. I use the powder though. I never buy pre-mixed and @ publix Naturade powder is a little more expensive than the slim fast powder.

Slim fast also had a huge recall on their pre-mixed shakes lately and they are marking the ones that are ok to drink...so you should check it out before getting it if you decide to go that route.

One more thing...I know you are asking about shakes, but I am going to try the meal replacement bars. I think they may be good when you have to eat but are too busy. I'll let you know what I find if you like :D

I'd take a real good look at the nutritional value and worth of those shakes and bars. Why would you want a shake or bar when you can eat real food?

You would be much better taking a flask of soup or a sandwich with some fruit. Takes minutes to prepare and much better for you.

Here's the nutritional value on the one I drink. I had to enter it into sparkpeople :D

Zin, I think what you are saying is that you are having trouble eating lunch at work and you're worried about not eating enough calories. If thats the case find a shake that would meet all your nutritional needs. Look at the ingredients, compare, look online. You want to find something that'll keep you satisfied until you can eat. It doesn't HAVE to be a weight loss shake in order to be healthy. Just look around a bit. Maybe check out a health food store.

I agree, when I was a vegetarian I bought some really good protein shakes which were not for weight loss.

Today I decided to give the Kirkland Signature (costco) brand shakes a try. I drank one in place of lunch, and I can say that it really does get rid of the hunger. So far so good, I guess :]

If you really are going to go the shake route why not grind up some fruit (banana, apricot, pineapple, strawberries), ice cubes, skim milk, perhaps cinnamon and maybe even throw in some whey powder..you not only get a lot of good fruit but protein too which will help satiate you

I'm thinking of eating only negative calorie foods (except for dinner) and just drinking a protein shake everyday to make up for loss of protein.

There's no such thing as "negative calorie food" ... and drinking a protein drink every day isn't going to "make up" for any loss of protein. Eating healthy foods in reasonable amounts and making sure to get protein from food sources is a much more reasonable way to do it.

I guess you can debate the shakes... but it works for me so far..

Shake for lunch and breakfast, real food for snacks around 10am and 3pm.. try to stay around 100-150 cals each for the snacks... and a smart dinner...

Works out to around 800-900 cals before dinner and dinner is usually around 600 cals... so 1500ish cals a day... and at 372lbs (currently, was 392 mid-feburary when i started this)

I drink muscle milk... a few different flavors, they are all pretty much 300 cals a serving, and fill me up. Plenty of protein to go with my workout (personal trainer than pushes the hell out of me) and it satiates my appetite.

Now, for the debate... I could find no foods that would fill me up during the day under 400 calories... so my choice is to eat more, or to use the shakes. They cover a good range of nutrition (more than most single meals would) and fill me up.

On top of all that, and all that matters to me (not to be rude to those who feel otherwise, im not calling your wrong, just saying in my case..) I FEEL much better overall. And while that's subjective, Its my subjectivity and my body so that's what I'm going with.

I think the shake would be a great way to eat healthy, eat quickly and lose weight. I tend to think that some type of protein needs to be in there because protein will digest slower and make you feel fuller for longer, but also some complex carbohydrates from fruit (or vegetables) would be good.

It is a matter of taste, but make sure:

1. The calorie content of the whole day is less than your body needs in one day.
2. You do not use refined sugar, refined flour or high fructose corn syrup because this stuff will not keep you feeling full for long or it gives you a spike of energy or taste and it is gone.
3. Keep a balance of protein, fruit, vegetables

I agree that Slimfast shakes are crap - once I looked at the ingredient list I stopped buying them.

I followed the Prevention "Flat Belly Diet" for a month and really liked their smoothie recipe. The basic recipe is: 1 cup of frozen fruit, 1 cup of milk and/or yogurt, and a tablespoon of flax oil. I usually add a little vanilla and nutmeg or cinnamon as well. If you like a sweeter drink, you can use low-calorie sweetened yogurt or add a little no-calorie sweetener.

I know the flax oil sounds crazy, but it's surprisingly good. The reason for the flax oil is that this diet is based around consuming mono-unsaturated fats (presumably in place of saturated fats, not in addition to them). The idea is to have a carefully measured amount of healthy fat at each meal to keep you feeling satiated. You eat four 400-calorie meals a day, and this shake is a full 400 calories. I was skeptical of that flax oil, but I found it worked. That shake kept me full for hours! And cold-pressed flax oil has no flavor at all that I could detect. It gave the shake a nice creamy texture without changing the flavor at all.

If you'd rather use protein instead of healthy fat to make the shake filling, you can add protein powder instead of flax oil. But I have not yet found a protein powder that doesn't add an unpleasant grainy texture to my fruit shakes.

Thanks for the reminder. I haven't made one of these for a while, but maybe I'll go back to smoothie snacks this week. My freezer is full of frozen strawberries, due to a great deal I found at the local Farmers Market. ::drool5::

If you haven't tried Shakeology yet you really should. You'll love it! I’m totally addicted, and believe me I've tried a bunch of the other shakes out there, and hated them! It comes in two flavors: Greenberry & Chocolate. From the moment I tried it – I've been hooked! The only non-vegan ingredient in it is whey protein which comes from hormone free, antibiotic free milk. It’s a daily nutritional shake that helps your body gently eliminate toxins that build up over time from eating highly processed foods; by using a proprietary blend of digestive enzymes & prebiotics, which efficiently allow for better absorption of essential nutrients. At the same time, 70 plus ultra-high quality whole ingredients deliver, essential amino acids, and 23 vits and mins your body needs to curb cravings, while the more than 20 different antioxidants and phytonutrients help reduce free radical damage that can lead to heart disease, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and stroke. It is gluten-, caffine-, refined sugar & artificial sweetener free, but certainly not free of taste or energy building nutrients. The cost is around $4/shake- pretty comparable with your daily Starbucks. I used to consume more than my fair share of coffee, diet soda, and what I thought were energy sustaining snacks, but boy was I wrong! Ever since switching to Shakeology ™ I have cut out all of it (except for an occasional treat when I add a Starbucks Via packet to my Shakeology ™ for a healthy Mocha Latte), and I have energy to spare! I prefer to split my servings. I use half a scoop of the Chocolate mixed with 6 – 8 oz of Unsweetened Almond milk, 4 oz of water, and ice. This gives me a delicious pick-me-up for right around 115 calories. If you want the additional calories you can use a whole scoop, and add a scoop of banana.

MOD: Sorry dobner, I know you aren't trying to push anything but the video does advertise/link to a weight loss program site. It's against forum rules.
