Weight Loss Plateau :(

Hi :)
For about 3 weeks now, I'm still at the same weight 163, I'm 5'8'' and I would really like to lose 5-10 more pounds. I've been eating about 1600-1700 calories a day, because before i was eating like 1300 and I started to get pounding headaches, which I figured was an indicator to increase my calorie intake. I drink plenty of water, and I've been trying the 30 day shred by jillian michaels everyday, with different cardio every other day, and a rest day. I guess I'm just trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks so much :)

everyone plateaus sometime(I had a 2 month plateau this winter). the key is to not get discouraged and you'll start losing weight eventually

I think you are going along the right lines by increasing your calorie intake a bit. The fact is, if you eat too little not only will your weight-loss slow down and perhaps stall entirely, but you’ll start losing weight from the places you really don’t want to lose it from. Your aim, is to lose fat and gain, or at least preserve, muscle ?

We need to remember our bodies are the result of millions of years of evolution, in which our ancestors were able to survive famine and starvation. You are the descendants of the ones who survived because their bodies had the slight edge needed.

And the upshot of that means your body is very efficient at hanging on to calories it needs when the incoming food-supply is cut below a certain level. What that means in practical terms is the weight you do lose may be muscle, not fat. Eventually you’ll start to cannibalise your internal organs and that can cause permanent damage. I think you were correct to go back up from the 1300 calories a day as the headaches were your bodies way of telling you to eat !

So if you’re tempted to skip meals in the mistaken belief that doing so will somehow accelerate your fat loss, you’re making a big mistake.

Here are a couple of tips to help break your plateau

1. Change your Workout
It takes your body only four weeks to get used to a workout. Once something becomes a routine for your metabolism, plateaus are likely.

2.Drink Plenty of Water
Thirst is often mistaken for hunger. Every time you feel the urge to snack, drink a glass of water first and see if the urge goes away.

3. Cut Down Your Alcohol Intake.
There are lots of hidden calories in booze so keep an eye on it....that's of course assuming you drink anything.

I suggest that to get off your weight-loss plateau, you increase your food intake by about 20% for a couple of days before cutting it back by just 10% (meaning you’ll be eating about 10% more than you were before).

This can often get your metabolism back up to speed and burning that unwanted fat again!

I hope that helps and good luck with reaching your goals.

I'm not a doctor, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Keep your calories at 1300, increase your protein drastically, shoot for at least 100-120g of protein a day, get a good multi-vitamin and some good fish oil pills. Start eating some nice natural food and no garbage. Trust me, upping your calories is not going to make you lose weight.

You need to start lifting some weights too. There are no doubts in my mind that you probably lost muscle.

If I've learned anything since I started it's all about TRICKING your body. Add more calories, then take them away and keep at it. Same with working out, change up your exercise routine every now and then.
