Weight loss pills?

Even a short while after eating a good meal, i want to eat something. Any advice on how can I control my hunger?

What do you consider "eating a good meal"?

If you eat a lot of carbs - the processed type - then you're blood sugar is going to spike then crash shortly after you eat, so yes, you're going to be hungry shortly.

On the other hand, if you eat vegetables and whole grains, then your blood sugar levels will level out and you won't get the crashes.

Good quality protein with your meals helps too to control hunger, as protein is harder to digest and stays in the stomach longer.

Pills cannot replace proper nutrition.

Doc said mostly what I would say. Eat veggies/fruits and complex carbs. Stay away from refined carbs (white rice, white pasta...etc.). Eat protien, if you eat meat eat lean meat, if not eat beans and/or tofu.

I eat only 3 meals a day of veggies/beans/fruit (and sometimes nuts) and I am never hungry. I'm actually kind of full after.

Drink water too. Stay away from sugar and sugar substitues.

I am not so sure sugar substitutes have been proven to make someone hungrier or not. I'd love to read more about that but as seeing that I chew enough gum in a day (about 7 sticks, sugarfree) plus a few packets of splenda in my teas, I haven't noticed this side effect of hunger as some people have put out there.

Some research but most inconclusive to humans or in general not well done:

The one above suggests that your body uses sweetness to determine calories in certain foods (I call bullshit, and my mind knows when I am eating the REAL deal foods that they are higher in calories. Becoming educated is the key here.)

I normally eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables and eggs etc., I dont eat any kind of meat..so I am a vegetarian and an eggetarian.

I avoid eating white bread, pasta etc., I do eat white rice at times but remove its starch by draining out the water - dont know if that makes much of a difference. But anyways - my main problem is that since the last 4 months or so I have been trying really hard to work on my diet as I have heard that what you eat contributes to 70% of what you look like. I have been working out also because of which I have been eating foods high in protien like Tofu, egg whites, low fat curd etc., and have been drinking low fat milk almost like water. In fact, I feel that my intake of carbs has been lesser than required - but that has not helped me in loosing a lot of weight. Because of low consumption of carbs, I have started to feel tired and low on energy. Now all of a sudden I have developed an enomorous appetite. Even an hour after having breakfast I feel like eating something substantial. And when its Lunch time, I am hungry again :( The same happens between lunch and supper. I have started eating fruits and healthy snacks like nuts but I eat them so much that their quantity is as large as my main meals.

and have been drinking low fat milk almost like water.

I hope this is an exaggeration, because if I were to drink low fat milk (or EVEN skim milk) that is about 8 oz times 8. A serving of milk is 120 calories = 960 calories a day! As a male, that is more than HALF of what I take in... my breakfast and lunch aren't even 960 calories!

This might contribute to the lack of weight-loss going on.

Just a thought.

I have a confession to make.....I started taking Phentermine yesterday. I know that I CAN do it without it, but since I got back from travelling, it just feels like it takes so much more to fill me up.....and my cravings for certain foods are CRAZY. So, I asked my doctor what sorts of things are available now and she explained the 3 big options and the expectations and side effects of each. I ended up deciding to try Phentermine, and I have to say that I am impressed. While some would consider it cheating, I consider getting myself back on the starting line....rather than being 100 yards behind. However, I would not recommend Phentermine for a lot of people. You have to have normal blood pressure and heart rate, and be carefully monitored by your physician. Also, it can become addictive, so you are only supposed to take it for 3 months, which I fully plan to do. For me it has given me a little bit of the confidence back that I used to have when losing weight. It feels absolutely HORRIBLE to constantly be hungry or craving sweets. By using Phentermine, I am able to shrink my stomach down without going through the torture, and get off sweets and get a good regimen going for my eating. I have only eaten healthy foods the last 2 days....whole grains, yogurt, fruit, lean meats, lean cheeses, etc....and I don't feel deprived. I feel like I am getting myself back on track.....just with a little help.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, and its not meant to be an advertisement for any sort of weight loss pill. I think they are dangerous, especially if taken without the supervision of a doctor. But, for me, the risk and the slight feeling of "cheating" is nothing compared to my desire to be back on the right track to being healthy and confident.

You think so? I have about 4 to 5 cups of milk in a day. Since I cannot eat more than 2 eggs a day, it is hard to get good amount of protein from a vegetarian diet.

Anyways, I have found some safe hunger suppressants:

Hoodiaphen - This is a natural diet suppressant made from some Asian and African herbs. Hoodiaphen is said to have no side effects what so ever however people are still advised to consult their doctors before taking them. This is a over the counter or non prescription drug - so it sounds like a safe bet.

Phentrazine - This is also a hunger suppressant like Hoodiaphen however it is not certain whether it is natural or not. It is supposed be having some side effects though but they are temperory and not harmful.

Both Hoodiaphen and Phentrazine are supposed to also improve the metabolic rate also which helps in burning calories faster.Even this is a over the counter drug.

Just trying to make up my mind between these two.

I can buy a knife without a doctor's note too, though.

Thanks for calling it out on this one too...

He is the blunt truth, you won't find anyone in here endorsing something like that. You will find people prescribing hard work and willpower. Which will take research on your part.

Somethings that people have mentioned like GREEN TEA and CLA's (conjugated linolic acids, I do take both of these) have some research behind them and aren't MIRACLE pills, which is what you seem to be looking for. They just work well with proper nutrition and exercise. The hunger pains go away... they really do. It's an addiction, and there will be withdraw symptoms.

Good Luck.

you know what's a good way to keep hunger away?

eating.

if you're hungry (I mean really hungry), you need to look at your program.

diet pills aren't the answer for a life change.

Thanks guys! I appreciate your suggestions. I think I should slow down the pace of my life and stop feeling anxious as that would change a lot of things including wanting to eat all the time.

It looks like you are doing pretty well at eating a healthy diet, so you have done well with cravings. And if you are exercising thats even better!

I have to agree about the milk thing. I would say 1-2 glasses is enough. Have you thought about protein shakes? They even have soy ones since you are a vegetarian. As a former/striving again vegetarian, I know that I ate a LOT of beans, which seemed to act pretty much as a protein since they are so full of fiber. If you want a good recipe for some good ones, I can give you it.

Also, since you are a vegetarian, you might want to look into taking vitamin B-12. It is the one thing our bodies really need but is hard to get from a vegetarian diet. A lack of B-12 can most definitely lead to lethargy and sleepyness. I actually know some students who (not recommending this at all!) take a bunch of b-12 to help them stay awake and study lol. But just in the right daily amount I found it helped A LOT.

And, not to tick anyone off on here but, I am actually on a diet pill right now. I lost 60lbs on my own in the past year, but then I went travelling for 4 months and I think my stomach capacity tripled in size (along with gaining about 20lbs back). I know the proper way to eat and I have proven to myself that I have will power. However, I HATE the feeling of always being hungry. When I can go to taco bell and eat 3 bean burritos, a cheesy gordita crunch, and cheesy fiesta potatoes (can you tell taco bell is the nemesis of my diet) and still feel hungry, I know my appetite is not normal. I can eat vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins with the rest of 'em, but when I am constantly thinking about food because I am still hungry, I end up binging (usually at taco bell). I have never taken a diet pill before this, and I had heard all the scary stories, but I asked my doctor to get the real facts. She told me about a few options and the side effects of each. I am in relatively good health (no high blood pressure or high heart rate), so the pills are relatively safe for me. I do keep an eye on my heart rate, sometimes I will check it, but so far it has not gone out of the normal range. I don't know....I guess I just want to give diet pills a little defense because they have definitely helped me. It is absolutely wonderful to not obsess over food all day....I feel like I think how a normal non-obese person would about food. I think diet pills fail when people do not have the basics of weight loss down such as a good nutrition and exercise plan and will power.

If someone can do it without diet pills (and I probably COULD do it without them, but its just insanely insanely tortorous) then by all means they should because they should not put their body at any extra risk. However, I am still very much on the obese level and I know that is hurting my heart more than a diet pill could for 3 months. I guess I weighed the costs and benefits and for me it is worth it to give it a try.

Sorry for the rant lol.

hello, many want to help me to lose weight. i want to try to lose weight with diet pills. what is your opinion?

Diet Pills suck. They promise you a quick fix but when all is said and done, the weight comes back on with interest. Exercise, eat moderately and most of all drink your water. Do not go more than 3-4 hours without nothing to eat. Even if it is a banana or apple, you need to keep up your energy level. I eat 6 times a day. Breakfast (usually oatmeal), snack, lunch, snack, supper, snack. I never eat after 7 or 8 pm. <----- that is my preferred time to stop eating. Other people have their own preferences. Keep track of all you calories and carbs. It is all about motivation. Get motivated. The diet pills can stay at the store. You don't need the extra chemicals and the empty promise of how to lose weight faster. Take care and have a groovy day. :seeya:

I know my appetite is not normal.
There's a book I've mentioned here quite frequently that you might want to give aread to - It's called Mindless Eating and it discusses eating habits and what we do to ourselves subconsciously...

Eating what you eat .at Taco Bell probably isn't related to your appetite, but the speed in whcih your eating - that you're not giving your body time to be satiated... Slowing down in a very rushed world is a tough thing to do but in thw weight loss world it's a necessity.

I hate to see someone your age resorting to weight loss pills...

Thanks Mal, I'll look into that book.

I know I felt really ashamed and worried about starting diet pills, and I definitely know they are not for everyone. But I feel that I have chosen to take them in a responsible matter...getting a prescription from my doctor, not ordering online, doing research on the different options, and making sure my health is the first priority.

I read somewhere that less than 1% of people who have 100lbs or more to lose ever actually get to the normal weight range. For me, i would rather take a little risk and humility by taking the diet pills to try and beat this statistic rather than fearing I will never get out of this obese body. I know you beat the statistic and then some! and that is amazing! I am not looking for diet pills to be a long term fix for me. You are only supposed to take Phentermine for 3 months, then wean yourself off of them. I just want a little push back in the right direction and the confidence I used to have that I will oneday be a normal weight.

Again, I'm not trying to endorse diet pills in any way, I just wanted to tell my story. Needless to say it is only my 3rd day on the pills, so I may have a different view of them later this year, but hopefully they will just do the job I want them to do and I will do the rest.

Here's to being healthy!

I go and see a physician every week(he perscribes me pills) I started my life change in december before I turned 30 I have learned to eat right and excercise daily (occasionally I will take a day off) I eat what I want when I started in december I weighed 220lbs I am only 5'4 I now weigh 188 and am still dropping kudos to all of you who can do it on your own I was just not one of you strong will'd people I have had no problem with the pills and am monitored closely weekly so dont knock it till you try it (if you are going to take pills seek the advice of a physician)

I agree completely If you are being monitored by a doctor and eating healty and excercising why not ! Who care what everyone else thinks about taking pills to HElp as long as you know that you have to excercise and eat right with them they are just help right there is no miracle just a little shove in the right direction wait till you get on the scale in a week or two and you just have a great big smile from the weight that you have lost it keeps you encouraged to keep excercising and eating right YOu go girl

I think one of the main reasons why I am not loosing weight is because of having too much of milk. Thanks for letting me know about alternate protein options..I will find out more about soy based protein shakes. Can you please share your bean recipe?

Yes I agree about the speed with which we eat our meals make a big difference on how satiated we feel after words.

I feel that at the end of the day it is all a mind game..how well you can motivate and control yourself. And most of all one needs to have confidence and patience that whatever we are doing would eventually show results. One tends to jump the gun too soon and give in when results don't show or are not satisfactory in short term.
