Weight Loss / Muscle Gain

Hi everyone. First post here, although I have been reading a lot of advice for a while now.

I have a little bit of a conundrum. I have recently got into Paragliding, and ended up purchasing a new lovely paraglider. Basically all gliders have a weight range.

I am 6ft and weigh 101kg. How difficult would it be to lean up and gain muscle to remain a weight similar to what I currently am (as the glider I have purchased suits my current weight)?

Cheers for any advice

It may be tough. But it is really hard to tell without know BF% and some more info. Even then, tough. You can lose some wieght and then work hard to add some muscle and if you are new you will have some success doing both for a time. So the key is to just get started and make adjustments accordingly.

My BF% is approximately 40% (not good either way).

I'll be honest, it will be very, very difficult for you to get your bf% within a healthy range (<20%) and stay at your current weight. At 40% bf, you have about 40kg (88#) of fat. At 20% bf, you would have to lose about 20kg (44#) of fat. That is doable. But, gaining 44# of muscle with no additional fat gain would be nearly impossible.

It's not easy to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time...not impossible, but not easy. You want to lose a lot of fat, and gain a lot of muscle. What is more "doable" is to lose the fat first, then gain the muscle.

You will have to make adjustments as you go along in any case.

As G8r80 said, you have a lot of fat to lose, and building muscle isn't as easy as losing fat......

Based on that thought. Can anyone suggest a good first target? Loose 5kg then replace with muscle. Or is it better to loose the right amount of fat then start building muscle?

personally, I think it is best to lose all the fat first, then work on building up muscle. See, when you lose the fat, you will have to be in a caloric deficit. When you are building muscle, you will have to have a caloric surplus. Hence, the difficulty of losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time.

Best thing you can do is, focus on losing the fat. Do cardio and lift weights, and when you have brought your fat% down, then you can work on building muscle up.

You will increase your strength while you are losing fat, and you may even gain *some* muscle, but it will not keep you at the same weight by any means.

One thing at a time :)
