Weight Loss FAQ

--
(second tier supps) protein powders like casein (used before bed) would be the one of choice for fat loss, whey (after workout) is also benifital.

Hi phaledax,

Thanks for providing a great post! I read the section on supplements with great interest, especially the part on casein. Do you know what foods contain high concentrations of this protein? I tried to look it up, but wikipedia (Casein - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) doesn't have much info! I'd like to find some foods that contain it, that I could eat post workout/before bed to help lose weight & build muscle!

Thanks again

Ben

Quick tip - when making a sandwich, only butter 1slice of bread. people always do both slices but there really is no point.

I apply butter to neither piece of bread when making a sandwich, so I guess I am one step ahead. Who are these people who make sandwiches with butter? Not too long ago I went to a function and there were some small sandwiches amongst the items on the food service tables. I took a bite of one that appeared to be dressed with mayonnaise, but in fact was buttered. It was vile.

While this is to a certain extent true, the bars themselves are processed food, meaning they are that much further away from food as nature intended. A much better alternative would be to make the bars for oneself. Not only do they taste better, but are healthier for you.

I am interested to know the big deal about being processed. Being processed, in and of itself, it not harmful. For example, when I have a headache, it is much more effective for me to swallow a processed aspirin tablet than to chew on a piece of willow bark in hopes of appeasing an anthropomorphized "nature".

Processed = Artificial ingredients and/or damaged ingredients.

Fat-Stripping Lifestyle Tips: 10 Ways to Stay Lean for Life

Let's get straight down to it: losing fat isn't easy. You've spent hours in the gym slaving away on the treadmill. Your diet consists of bird seed and a few sprigs of alfalfa. You've bought every diet book and exercise gimmick on the market, yet nothing seems to work. Don't despair! There is hope! Arm yourself with these science-based fat loss strategies and keep it off for life!

First off, throw away your bathroom scale. It's not your friend. Don't focus on losing weight. Focus on losing body fat. Your goal should be to maintain or build muscle tissue and burn away stored fat. Muscle is very metabolically active and pays a higher caloric "rent" in the body just to sustain itself. Fat is nothing more than a metabolic freeloader that burns very few calories to keep itself alive. If after four months your scale weight hasn't changed but your clothes fit you magnificently, then chances are you changed your body composition for the better. THAT is your goal.

People trudge along on the treadmill or bike working in what they believe is their fatburning zone. Unfortunately, the so-called fatburning mode on the bike is the very mode that's going to keep you fat. Here's why.

While working at a lower intensity, your body burns more fat as a fuel source for the moment, BUT the cumulative calories burned are actually lower than if you'd opted for the higher intensity "cardio" mode. While in the cardio mode, you will burn less fat and more sugar as fuel sources, BUT your overall calories burned will be much greater. In the long-term, you are served much better by exercising at higher intensities and maximizing the calorie burn than focusing on which metabolic fuel source you're using. Again, the overall CUMULATIVE calorie deficit is what matters and that's what's going to have you looking good for summer!

Follow these 10 fat stripping tips

1. If you're completely new to exercise, you must safely develop your fitness foundation then graduate to higher intensities. Doing too much too soon will leave you sore and discourage you from continuing. Start off with a leisurely pace on the bike or treadmill for no more than 20 minutes and do this 3 to 4 days per week. Each week, increase your duration by 5-10 minutes per session until you are up to 45-60 minutes of non-stop cardio exercise.

2. Now that your fitness foundation is in place, start cranking up the intensity a bit with intervals. Intervals are higher intensity sprints interspersed within your regular cardio routine which are designed to get your heart racing and crank up the calorie burning control knob. During your cardio exercise, start off with 1 to 2-minute high intensity bursts and then give yourself 3-4 minutes of active recovery at a lower intensity (keep walking or pedaling). Perform your intervals at an intensity high enough that you can barely speak to the person next to you, preferably an exercise partner who shares your same fat loss goals.

3. After your body adapts to the intervals, now start trying to maintain higher intensities on a continuous basis. The longer you can exercise at higher intensities, the more calories you burn, and consequently, the more fat you pull out of storage.

4. Increase your metabolism with resistance training. That's right, start lifting weights. If you don't like weights, try something like calisthenics or any other mode of resistance that will stress your muscles to a degree to which they're not normally accustomed. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn both with exercise and at rest.

5. Make small dietary changes you can live with. If you cut out a mere 250 dietary calories per day and burned 250 calories through exercise, this is a daily total of 500 calories. It is known that you must burn 3500 calories above and beyond your normal energy needs to lose one pound of stored body fat. So this 500 calorie deficit over seven days would be one pound of stored body fat burned.

6. Not convinced? One pound of fat loss per week over the course of one calendar year is 50 pounds of FAT LOSS. Notice my terminology did not include the words weight loss. Who cares about losing weight? I can put you on the pigs feet and mayonnaise diet and you will lose weight simply because it's low calorie, but you won't lose much in the way of fat. You'll likely lose your valuable muscle as well as some water weight. Once you go back to eating normal food, you will gain back all the weight and then some. In the long-run the only thing that matters is body composition, and if you can strip fat and hold onto or build muscle, then you are reprogramming your body for life.

7. Waste as much energy as you can. Be as inefficient as humanly possible. In other words, take the long way through life and avoid shortcuts.Do not take elevators or moving walkways. Take the stairs. Walk up steep hills. Carry a heavy backpack. The more effort you spend on activities of daily living, the more fit and lean you will be for life. All calories burned are cumulative.

8. Misery loves company. Find out who your saboteurs and supporters are. Avoid those that will try to undermine and jeopardize your efforts out of jealousy. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who encourage your efforts.

9. Make it fun. Frankly, it doesn't matter what kind of exercise you like. Find the one you enjoy, the one you'll stick with, and do it regularly. I used the bike and walking example above, but to the extend that you lead an active lifestyle with the calorie burning control knob cranked all the way up, you WILL lose fat and keep it off.

10. The media is NOT your friend. Cancel your cable TV subscription or at least stop watching it. Stop reading fluffy celebrity magazines. These are loaded with unrealistic body images that are merely airbrushed photos meant to provide false hope and sell copies.

FINAL THOUGHTS In my 17 years as a health and fitness authority, I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that everyone I've worked with that's simply committed themselves to doing the right type of exercise and was consistent with it obtained a fitter, healthier body. The trick to fat loss is that there IS NO TRICK. Consistency, hard work, and the proper type of exercise will always win out over the fad diet books and late night infomercial gimmicks.

Introduction
Walk into any health food store and you might be slapped in the face with names like Inferno, Up Your Gas, and Ripped Fuel! These are the battle cries of various supplement companies vying for your hard earned dollars. And it's convincing. Who wouldn't want to incinerate a little extra fat or get gassed up and ripped like a chiseled Greek god?

Over the past decade, America's battle of the bulge has spawned a multi-billion dollar dietary supplement industry. Browse through a any muscle magazine these days and you can't help but get snagged on sharp names like Razor Ripped, Ripped to the Max, Ripped Force, Extreme Ripped Force, and Metacuts. Turn the page and the temperature rises as more hot products named Inferno, Thermicore, and Thermospeed entice you with glossy, colorful multi-page advertisements. But be careful, lest you find yourself in the burn unit getting stitches on scorched fingers!

But the true herbal heavy hitters are the big budget powerhouse multilevel marketing firms. Distributors push products on everything from internet websites to online chat rooms and message boards to colorful shopping mall kiosks to windshield fliers. Most have their own ma huang/guarana blends which, in simple English, are merely high charged ephedrine/caffeine mixes.

Herbal Uppers: Getting Ripped or Ripped Off?
The popularity of herbal supplements is soaring. With the public's growing distrust of the medical establishment, people are shying away from prescription and over the counter weight loss drugs, instead opting for the "natural, help yourself" approach.

However, tip-toeing through a virtual herbal minefield can be confusing, if not downright intimidating without an earned doctorate in botany. Ruth Kava, Ph.D., R.D., the Director of Nutrition for the American Council on Science and Health cautions that people should not be so quick to jump on the herbal bandwagon. "Not only are tested pharmaceutical products potentially harmful, herbal mimics can do the same and are not tested."

Consumers should understand that while pharmaceutical weight loss aids like Dexatrim might be no more effective than their herbal relatives, from a safety standpoint, at least you know the exact quantity of active ingredient per dose. Herbal remedies do not afford you this luxury, so the actual amount of active ingredients you receive could vary.

Ma huang (also called ephedra, Chinese ephedra, or ephedrine) usually tops the ingredient list on most herbal weight loss products. The active chemical compounds found in this herb are called alkaloids, the most common of which is ephedrine. Alkaloids are amphetamine-like compounds that stimulate the cardiovascular and central nervous system. This is why taking ma huang elevates your heart rate and blood pressure, giving you that jolt of energy!

While these effects probably pose no immediate danger to the apparently healthy population, people with existing medical conditions might be well advised to steer clear. Heart and stroke patients, those with high blood pressure, thyroid problems, diabetes, or any other health condition adversely affected by high blood pressure should seek their physician's advice before trying ma huang.

With all the hype surrounding this herb, does it live up to it's reputation as a fat stripper? According to Varro Tyler, Ph.D, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Purdue University, "Ephedra might work a little for weight loss, but not as much as people think."

It may mildly boost metabolism, but it could be the alkaloids' appetite suppressive effect that is really responsible for lost pounds. Either way, this is still desirable to most dieters and should not be discounted.

People might be tempted to use herbal stimulants as a motivational tool for hitting the gym. But using ephedrine to get ‘jacked up' for workouts can cause unpleasant side effects such as rapid heart rate, palpitations, nervousness, dizziness, and increased blood pressure, which could adversely affect performance and health.

Herbal Blends
Herbs are often blended with other herbs, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or any other nutrient du jour. The blends are sold under the guise that their combined fat burning potential is greater than each of the ingredients alone. Hydroxycut is a popular product marketed as a "highly effective fat burning supplement" that can "dramatically increase fat loss." It contains several herbs and nutrients, most notably ma huang and guarana. Guarana is an herbal source of caffeine which when combined with ephedra alkaloids, makes for a potent mix that can send you bouncing off the walls. Dayne Callum, a biochemist in Boston, Massachussetts said, "After a long sabbatical from the gym, I decided to take Hydroxycut as a way to jumpstart losing weight. I took it for one month and lost 10 lbs but had to stop because it made me too jittery. Then the next month, I lost about the same amount of weight but without the jitters."

Dr. Tyler offered words of warning about herbal cocktails stating, "caffeine magnifies ephedrine's effects which can be dangerous for people with existing high blood pressure." This raises questions about the safety of herbal products. What's being done to protect consumers?

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act In October of 1994, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The law provides that, as long as a product is labeled a dietary supplement, it can be sold to consumers without proof of safety, efficacy, purity, or potency. The burden of proof is now on the Food and Drug Administration to prove that a supplement DOESN'T work or is harmful. If a product is found to be dangerous to the public welfare, it can be pulled from the market. Dr. Tyler refers to the law as a double-edged sword. "On one hand, it keeps products on the market, but on the other hand, it allows many companies to enter the market without exercising proper care and sensibility."

Consumers' preference of herbal remedies over prescription drugs is understandable. Phen-Fen's association with heart valve damage and subsequent 1997 removal from the market sent shock waves though the public and served to reinforce distrust for the pharmaceutical industry. The scare gave rise to a more "natural" alternative called "Herbal Phen-Fen." The main ingredients in this product are ma huang and St. John's Wort. Promotional literature suggests that the combination will offer the same results as the prescription counterpart. However, the Food and Drug Administration counters these claims saying that the mix has not been proven effective for weight loss.

Intense marketing has lulled the public into believing that "natural" equals "safe and effective." Unfortunately, this is not always the case. For example, other "natural" herbs like chaparral and comfrey (not used for weight loss) have been associated with liver damage.

Under DSHEA, product potency is not guaranteed. Researchers at the University of Arkansas found considerable variation in the alkaloid content of nine commercially available supplements. The authors suggested that the active components found in different ephedra species can vary, leading to remarkable concentration differences among products. They warned that weakened labeling laws could contribute to toxicities associated with ma huang usage.

After thousands of reports of adverse reactions related to ma huang, the Food and Drug Administration is proposing new labeling requirements that would recommend a total daily dose of 24 milligrams per day or less of ephedra alkaloids.

Supplement is the Operative Word
The bottom line is that until reliable research proves herbal stimulants safe and effective, you may want to consider other ways to lose weight. Be responsible and exercise caution. Watch out who's pushing pills. Because most personal trainers are not registered dietitians or pharmacologists, you should view their recommendation for such products with skepticism-are they selling the product on commission?

Remember, herbal supplements are just that, supplements, not a substitute for reduced-calorie eating and regular exercise. So get out there, gas up, and incinerate those extra pounds the way nature intended, with healthy lifestyle habits. You'll look like a chiseled Greek god in no time!

Drink more Water ... it's healthy

Drink more water. I know, you've heard this one before. But, can you truthfully say you are doing it? Not many people can. Ponder this. You consist of about 73% water. Your body gives off water all day and all night. You must continuosly replenish your water levels in order for your body to function at its highest levels. Many fitness professionals talk about the metabolism slowing down as a result of too little food intake. However, just as important, yet rarely mentioned is water intake and its effect on metabolism. Not getting enough water can cause water retention and a slowing of the metabolism. Both of these can prevent weight loss and cause weight gain.
