Weight gain tied to breast cancer risk

... yup, something else is now linked with cancer. It does kind of seem like everything we do in a day is now linked with cancer.
The amount of weight a woman gains after age 18 is a strong signal as to whether she will get breast cancer later in life, according to new research released Wednesday by the American Cancer Society.

Well I just read your comments on weight gain and breast cancer. As someone who gained weight after giving birth to my son and dealing with several different cases of cancer in my family in the past year this artical just makes me angry. According to this artical I am more suspectible to getting breast cancer because of this. This sure makes turning 40 more exciting. Now a days anything we eat or breath causes cancer. I sure hope that the water we drink doesn't contain any of the toxins that may cause this. Pretty soon young women will not want to eat for sure because they will have this fear of getting breast cancer. Our your women today are allready suffering from eating disorders because alot of them think that they aren't attractive unless they are thin. I really do not know what we are going to do.

is this another trick to put pressure on women to stay skinny. Sheeesh - High School! I had 100 - 110lbs at the end of high school. I now weigh approximately 125 and I don't consider myself overweight and now this. According to this study I now have to worry about getting breast cancer. I am barely an A-Cup and the thought of getting breast cancer never crossed my mind. There is no family history, I don't smoke and I take good care of myself. I guess I just will refuse to believe it and stay healthy and happy

OKAY...I can't sleep! However, the breast cancer article was somewhat ambivalent! I agree w/ AllCdnBoy...Now of days, it seems like anything we do OR expose ourselves to (being it sunlight or just the air that we breathe) causes a major health risk or fatal disease. So, I guess I'm extremely screwed...I've always been 120 lbs. w/ a 38DD cup! Oh woe is me! If everyone in this world had the mentality of a chaotic hypochondriac, Then what would be the point of working out, not smoking and trying to maintain or achieve a level of good health?

I have the feeling that everything new or what they can't explain is called cancer. Whenever they don't know what it is and where it is coming from ...it is automatically cancer. Like you said, sunlight, the air we breath and almost everything we eat can cause cancer, it was only a matter of time, before they 'found out' that weight can be one of the causes as well.
Well Angelfly, maybe that is already a reason for a lot of people to justify and stick with their unhealthy habits.

are of the same opinion with you

The OP is right - boiled water, red wine, walking ... I'm sure it has all been linked with cancer at some point ...

Obesity is a risk factor for many common cancers, including colorectal cancer and breast cancer in postmenopausal women. However, whether obesity plays a role in prostate cancer risk has been unclear, researchers say.

The new study finds that “body mass in both younger and older adulthood, and weight gain between these periods of life, may influence prostate cancer risk,” said study author Brenda Y. Hernandez, an assistant professor at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.
