Weighing In at 276

Thanks so much :)

My strategy is really about counting calories. But I also read this book called Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman that really informed me about how food affects your body. Since I read it, I try to eat mostly un-processed things. I eat a lot of vegetables, beans, and fruit. The not eating things made from white flour kind of fits in there (besides the fact that eating things made with flour makes me crave more of it). I avoid most carbs including whole wheat pasta and brown rice, not because they are bad for me, but because they dont keep me full for very long and are relatively high in calories for the amount you eat. I can eat a huge serving of broccoli or spinach and only get 100-150 calories and it will make me relatively full. That way if I eat veggies with each of my meals, the rest of what I eat wont be as much because I will already be partially full. lol I'm not sure that you were asking for my whole strategy, but those are some of the main parts of it. I have not been good so far with exercising, so the weight that I have lost is mostly due to the way I eat. I do have a cheat day about once a week, though there have been weeks (i.e. Spring Break) where I had MANY cheat days. I am trying to cut down to one cheat day every 2 weeks or so, but i'll see how that goes.

Kashi cookies are pretty good. They are filling and a lot less sweet (but still sweet enough) so that I don't crave more sugar afterwards. I have actually found that if I eat one about 45 minutes before I work out, the little carb and sugar boost really helps.

I know what you mean about being able to eat ENORMOUS amounts. I am like that as well. Its especially true with things like refined carbs, though. I've had that experience with pancakes as well. I never felt full, so why shouldnt I keep on eating them lol. I have found that with beans, fruits and veggies, I get full much more quickly and am satisfied.

Hello Dustin!

Thanks for the good luck and good luck to you too *

The attitude class last night was good. We worked on ways of staying calm when everything around us is out of control.

Apparently if we're not calm we act out and usually develop a compulsive behavior.

Today's task is to remain calm no matter what.

Here goes ...

1. I like my hair do today
2. I like learning to play guitar
3. I like visiting people

Hey Cshani,

Good to hear you're well.

It should be interesting finding out more about yourself. Hopefully once you get down to the 'root' you'll know how to tackle it. You said you've been eating huge amounts since you were a child - the class might be a good way of finding out why, and how you can curb it.

The cheat day might be a good idea - at the moment I have mine once a week (on Sundays) where I allow myself to eat whatever I want. I've been told that after a while you no longer have the weird cravings. Either way I like the idea of letting my body have what it wants for one day of the week, but giving it what it NEEDS for the remaining 6 days of the week. As I progress I might have fortnightly cheat days, instead of weekly. But I guess you'll have to develop a plan for yourself.

Oh, and though I don't know what this Kashi brand is, I've noticed that so many bodybuilders, dieters and weight watchers have Kashi Lean for breakfast. Maybe you should do some research on it and see how you can fit it into your diet.

I don't know if this will help, but maybe you should take a walk everyday. It'll clear your head and make you feel better..plus it helps in weight loss...you might as well tackle it in a different way. Sometimes I wish I could go into people's heads to see what makes them do things, mine included..

You also might want to calculate how many calories you need to sustain your current weight. Try not to think of depriving yourself in any way at all.

It's a long slow process, but it's great that you're acknowledging the need for change, and are doing something about it. I hope you stay very calm today (and tomorrow too) no matter what. Breathe deeply and slowly. And let us know how it turns out. I'm still rooting for you!

Kashi has a lot of good products. I havent had the cereal, my roomate didn't like it too much, but a lot of their other products are relatively yummy for the nutrients that is in them. I'll list a few that are good from the top of my head. The cheese crackers, the oatmeal flax seed cookies, dark chocolate chip cookies, the snack bars ( I cant remember which one I used to eat, but it was pretty good). And I have heard that the oatmeal is good. I just stick with the cookies because I try to eat mostly non-processed stuff. But as far as processed goes, Kashi is a good brand.

I agree with RhoRho about walking. I have started to LOVE my walks. I just listen to my music and let my mind wander, its almost like a little vacation from the day and I can relax and really reflect on things.

Hope you're having a good day :)

I really like the Kashi cereal, I had stopped eating most cereals a long time ago, but came across the kashi. Its definately not sweet but i quite like it with fruit and soy or almond milk. I havent tried the cookies though, they sound interesting, ill have to look for them
:) Michelle

hahaha sorry :( I tend to write more interesting things in other people's diaries than I do my own....its a problem.....lol

But anyways....thanks Brazenly.....and hi to you.......lol

Hi RhoRho and somethingnew912! Thanks for the suggestions, walking is really good exercise. I recently read that mail men and women are the fittest people in America because of the amount of walking they do. Referees are really fit people too.

This week I intend to get a good pedometer so I can start tracking my steps.

Do you count your steps or time your walks?

Hi Michelle! I hope you had a good weekend. Happy Monday!
Maybe I'll try the Kashi if I get bored with All Bran, barley or flax. Kashi sounds too tastey - I've been known to eat a whole box of cereal in one day. Oh how I love cereal. The All Bran is an exception because it's kind of boring. I like that it's so crunchy though (the All Bran buds, that is).

I discovered this weekend ... or became aware ... that I love crunching. Crunchy foods are fun to eat.

Trader Joe's has some wonderful veggie/flax chips that I've been eating instead of corn chips. Yay substitutions! The chips are tasty and have some fiber, plus flax is good for me.
I plan to transition away from the chips with celery, which I ate several times this weekend. With hummus (oh fantastic wonderful substitution for cream and cheese based dips) celery is quite tasty.

Also, I picked up some pre-cut apples from Trader Joes and munched on those.

The portion control issue I still haven't conquered. I pre-measured but went back for 2nds and 3rds. With apples and celerey, that's not bad. (Hey! I didn't eat any fast food this weekend! ... didn't realize that until just now) Hummus, chips and ginger snaps however, have calories and fat that add up quickly.

I have a feeling that I ate a lot this weekend because I hardly drank any water. An article I read a long time ago said that people who overeat usually do so because they're eating when their body is telling them they're thirsty. I bet I do that.

OK so the weekend is gone. I give myself kudos for going to Trader Joe's for apples, celery and hummus instead of driving through the evil taco bell.

I also give myself kudos for not eating dairy products or meat.

Next weekend I will be more mindful of my water intake and eat breakfasts that fulfill me for 3 hours.

I bought enough apples and celery to get me to Thursday evening and I still have barley, beans, All Bran, Flax, Veggie chips, Hummus and soup. My goal is to eat healthfully 80% or more of the time from now to Friday morning. No stops for food anywhere in that time frame. (20% is dedicated to ginger snaps, toast with jam and baked french fries with katchup)

1880 calories a day. 42 grams of fat. 35 or more grams of fiber. 10 cups of water. vitamins. walking, stretching, boucing or exercise video. sleep.

Today I like:

1. That bad days no longer send me into weeks of binging. HOORAY!
2. Every day I visit the weight loss forum I find new ways to get healthy.YAY!
3. Healthy eating is making sense to me and I feel more confident that I will make better eating choices. YIPPEE!

It looks like a good day :)
And good for you for stopping in at Trader Joes! I find I do that a lot now that I gave up fat food restaurants (what my daughter calls them).

Usually, she gets the sushi and I get a premade sald - I love theirs!

Well done cshani,

It sounds like you're at the start of something there. For one, you're praising yourself for doing something positive, which is always better than beating yourself up for having a slip-up.

In answer to your question, I don't really use a pedometer. I have one, but I tend to go it by ear... once I start walking it's hard to stop so I don't really measure...but maybe I should, cos I'd get a sense of my own achievement. (Thanks cshani). I'm thinking of joining The Ramblers - they specialise in hiking long (or short) distances. It'll be so cool, I think.

I agree with you - crunchy foods are sooooo much fun... The only downside to them is they tend to tear my gums up something stupid, which I guess is good cos it means I don't overeat.

I like your excitement about healthy eating - good on you girl.

Hey cshani,

Just dropped in to say hi - how's it all going?

I've been a little ill myself but I'm back and raring to go. Hope all is well with you. Hope to chat to you soon.

Hi M2M, somethingnew912, Michelle and RhoRho~

I hope you are all doing very well :)

Work has been kind of hectic and I haven't been able to check in for a week but the dieting is going well. Yay!

I don't think I posted before but I stopped eating bread and sugar and have been eating salad, beans, tofu, All Bran, apples, almond milk, grape juice, hummus and veggie chips primarily. Started that last Saturday.

Today I ran on my rebounder for 15 minutes and may do it again tonight ... possibly do some stretching.

I feel pretty good. I have been eating much less food (3 meals daily) and feel OK. Of course I'd love to eat a huge hunk of cake. Going to bed at night knowing I ate food that's good for me is more motivating right now.

Plus I outlined my current body onto my wall. Oh yeah.

So - I took the lamp shade off of my reading lamp so I could see some chin hairs I was trying to pluck and couldn't see well enough. I should have gotten out of bed and gone into the bathroom or turned on the overhead light but I was feeling lazy.

I didn't return the shade to the lamp when I was done and was headed to the bathroom when I saw my gigantic shadow on the wall. I took a pencil and traced around it.

Then I traced what I want my body to look like. Kind of like I've seen on those "6 week body makeover" commercials.

I see it everytime I'm going into the hallway.

It's a sight, and motivating.

I had cut my head out of a picuture and glued it to someone elses body for motivation a couple of months ago. The outcome amuses me but I don't think it is enough of a visual. Although, I did make 3 copies and put them by a full lenght mirror, TV and door.

Okay,

I'm going to read your diaries now.

Hiya cshani

Glad your week's gone well. I knew you'd do it. The eating, I mean..It's gradual but you soon get into it. As you said it's really motivating knowing you're giving your body the right stuff.. You might still want to allow yourself some cake occasionally. It's up to you when you have it - once a week, once a month....y'get the idea..

I REALLY liked your idea of outlining your body onto the wall. It's a fantastic way of showing definite progress as the weeks and months go by. You'll be very glad you did that, me thinks.. I actually wish I could do the same now, except that I'm renting and I don't want my landlord withholding my deposity because of pencil marks on the wall :D

Good on you cshani, keep up the very good work!

hi cshani, thanks for stopping by my diary and saying hi, you are doing some really interesting things to keep yourself motivated, I really enjoy reading up on you. Fresh ideas are always a good thing. I have been switching to more tofu, beans, lentils etc. Not all at once, but introducing them more and more. Have you noticed a big difference in how you feel, doing such a drastic switch over?
Michelle

Hi Rho and Michelle,

Happy Friday! I hope it's going well thus far.

The pencil marks, I was worried about after making the first mark on the wall (I rent too) but then I remembered the commercials for the Mr. Clean magic wipe. Apparently it can erase crayon, pen and pencil from any surface. Too bad I didn't test it beforehand. I'll let you know if it works after getting one this weekend.

Oh the eating. I have to confess Michelle, yesteday on the way to an evening class I stopped and got 2 bean burritos and then stopped again and got a BLT sandwich and medium fries from McDonalds.

Today I'm back to eating apples, salad, carrots, etc.

I was annoyed with myself for eating so much junk food in one sitting but I did figure out what my trigger is.

Hunger.

If I had had some apple slices and flax chips in the car with me, I would not have eated Taco Bell and McDonalds.

I was shopping in a plaza where my options were Burger King, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell and when I get hungry I want to eat NOW.

So I opted for the "least" damaging but once I get started it's just ... on.

Anyway, to answer your question, yes. I definitely feel the difference. Several days of eating mostly salad and apples I could tell I was sleeping deeper. I didn't wake up choking (I'm sure it's apnea) and someone at work told me yesterday that I'm whittling away.

I read that 100% grape juice is an appetite suppressant and have been drinking a cup a day and I think it helps. On the days I drink grape juice I'm satisfied with the healthy foods.

Twice I've had apple juice or a fruit blend juice and both days I was starving (yesteday was one of those days).

I've found though, that my tastes are still very limited. I hate tofu. I hate broccoli, spinach, carrots and most vegetables - only after trying to eat them so much in one week.

Apples, salad, beans, hummus, flax chips and grape juice, Almond Breeze and All Bran I LOVE even after eating them every day for a couple weeks.

Anyhow,

I think we can do this. Finding the foods we like that are on the healthier side might take a bit, but I'm sure it'll get easier and maybe fun.

Have a good weekend!

Well I guess I'm OK
It seems like I'm losing weight pretty consistantly.
I wish I didn't have this much to lose.
It's getting so warm here (80's) and I don't enjoy the hot weather so I'm a little grumpy.
Anyhow, I'll go get myself a big hat and some pastel colored shirts and probably feel a bit better. I haven't eaten since 9:00 so that's another reason why I feel a little low.
Plus I gave notice at a place where I intern and feel sad about it, which is very strange. I'm not friends with anyone there, don't like the work and had very little chance for advancement.
I guess I just don't like saying goodbye.
Stupid bummer day.
When I get home I'm gonna jump on my rebounder and do a tiny bit of yoga booty ballet.

What I like:

I do like the color my hair turned out after dying it.
I like that I prefer apple slices to icecream (which I never thought would happen)
I like that I am learning how to express my feelings rather than keeping them inside and then eating a cake when I get home.
