Yes you will burn a few extra calories . Lets say you burn a 100 calories sitting on your sofa , You would only burn say an extra 15-20 Calories By walking . Walking for weight loss is minimal . There's 3000 calories in 1 lb of fat . So your grandfather would have had to been walking miles upon miles a week To purely lose weight from walking . You do lose muscle from Running / Face pace walking etc . That might also contribute to his loss on the scales . But that's not a good thing losing muscle , you want muscle to burn calories . I guarantee you it was your grandfathers diet that lost him a 150lbs more than anything.
Picking up the pace ... Your body will get used to that as well . Its never ending with endurance type training . Your body will always adapt and will always get good at burning minimum calories Whilst covering long distances .
its actually closer to approximately 3500 calories in 1 lb of fat. he walked up to 5 miles a day some times more. his diet had little to no change in it ( he still eats meat and potatoes )... i'm not even kidding. where are you getting 15- 20 extra calories from? it depends on your weight, speed and distance. to determine your calories burned while walking. I am not saying its the end all but to say it does little or nothing is ludicrous. you take a 300 lb person and make them walk a mile each day then increase that they are going to burn calories, its also easy so they can stick to it. after they get to the point where walking is So easy then they can start running. its an easy course to follow for a some one starting.
you take that same 300 lb person and tell them to Run they are going to quite after a week of pain and discomfort etc...
this is my thought on it all, its not meant to start a fight or anything.
Also yes, he did lose muscle but not like you would think, my grandfather is built like a bull, during the summer he looks toned for an old man... i don't mess with him thats for sure. i'm 25 and i think he could still kick my ass.
haha
