Walking the Dog

DOGS are better than gyms for shedding weight because the average pet owner covers more miles than health club members, according to a new study.

Researchers found the average dog owner walks the equivalent of London to Bangkok over the animal's lifetime - or around 676 miles a year.

But the study revealed that gym goers clocked up an average of just 468 miles a year on various exercise bikes, running machines and other gadgets.

The study also found that 92 per cent of dog owners stick to an exercise routine through the years, compared to only 52 per cent of gym members who continue to go often after two or three months.

Eh, I have to go on two walks when I walk my dog....he can't walk as far as I can! haha

Walking the dog is good for both the dog and his companion! Plus, they do give great motivation, it's so hard to say no to those big beautiful brown eyes. One of my dogs is very active, only 3 years old and a strong, fast walker. The other one is an old senior girl, she can't walk too fast or too long. I just got a backpack for the younger dog, so I can add weight to wear him out sooner. Usually, when I'm walking both of them I have to go back to the car after 30 minutes and leave the old girl there while I continue on with the youngster.

Owning a dog is such a big responsibility - but in directly, it makes you responsible to yourself! The fact that the report reveals is that owning a dog makes you get out and walk everyday. The problem of modern living as opposed to the sort of living that we evolved around is that we neither walk nor run enough anymore - plain and simple. Dogs make us relive that experience.

That only works if you have to walk your dog...I live out in the country and my dog is an indoor/outdoor dog...i rarely take her for walks! I DO love to walk her though, when I lived in a town I used to walk her about 4 miles each day. Really relaxing, fun, and good for both of us.

I live in the country too, but I still take my dogs out on walks. It's good for them and for me. I've been having trouble with the big yellow lab, Louie, he wants to be the boss...the "pack leader" and he's very strong too. For Christmas I got him a doggie backpack and we tried it this week, what a difference that makes! I loaded it down with 2 lb handweights and 1 lb water bottles. He walked beautifully, with purpose.

Now, if I can get him to quit barking at other dogs who are out for a stroll. He's a real lunkhead, but I love him.
