Wait till soreness is gone?

Hello all,

Quick question. I'm under the impression that muscles should be healed most of the time within 72 hours. I'm trying to lift almost every other day, but was pretty weak and shaky in the legs the last time (yesterday). Darn those squats and lunges! I'm awfully sore still tonight and am wondering if I need to leave out those exercises tomorrow, or do a few even If I'm still sore. That gives me 48 hours to recover. I just started and am in no hurry, but I hate to mess up my schedule.

I know you guys will probably say don't do so much right away, but dang. I only did 2 sets of 5 of each with no weights!! Gotta start somewhere right? Should I do even fewer each time so as not to get sore? Or go ahead and get sore and wait longer in between? Or grit my teeth and do them sore?

Thanks

Muscles should be recovered within 48-72 hours assuming you aren't doing too much... which doesn't seem to be the case. Residual soreness may stick around longer than that. You can lift through it... many times this will actually help with the soreness. If you're too sore though, just push the weight training back a day or two. Being too rigid and inflexible for these sorts of situations isn't good.

Thank you Steve. I don't know how you get around to answering so many questions. I think I can go ahead with the rest of my workout and leave out the squats. I'm just a little frustrated because the last time I did squats and lunges I did twice as many WITH weight and was out of commission for some time. I thought I was being smart this time. I'll try ONE set of 5 next time and see if even that kills me. Thanks again.

I've found that a light jog the day after a big leg workout (maybe 15-20 minutes) really helps bring the soreness down. Steady state cardio is aerobic exercise and can help bring down the levels of lactic acid in your muscles. :)

Well I went ahead and did my usual workout minus some intensity and minus the squats/lunges. Basically just leg lift stuff, ab work, and dumbell arm stuff. Then I swam for 30 minutes and boy do I feel a LOT better.

A good long session of stretching always make my sore muscles feel better. And I agree that a jog or brisk walk coupled with the stretching feels sooooo good.

How was your soreness DURING your workout??

I know from experience that at this point (just starting again) good stretching will make me more sore than even lunges. I'm VERY slowly working up the stretching so I don't get so sore that I can't work out. Is that weird?

During my workout today it was pretty darn hurty but got better about halfway through. Then after the swimming I feel great with just a little left in my butt. Unfortunately I can't stand jogging. I'm not all that fond of walking either! Of course I've never actually jogged so maybe I'm full of it? I need to figure something out cause my pool isn't going to stay 86 degrees forever.

Stretching makes you sore? I don't think I have ever met anyone that stretching had that effect on. So,yeah, I guess that is pretty weird..lol.

I felt the same way you did about running up until about a year ago. About a year ago a friend of mine challenged me to the Couch to 5K program and I fell in love with running. I adore it now and even crave it if I have to go many days without it. Is that weird? Same thing happend with math. I hated it when I was in high school, but found a new love for it when I started back to college.

Have you seen the Couch to 5K program? I swear when I started it, the weight practically fell straight off in no time flat.
