Very frustrated-need support

Hi All. So I am a pretty normal size-just looking to lose a few pounds that I've recently put on, making my pants not fit comfortably. A couple weeks ago I made the mistake of trying to lose the weight too quickly and went on a very low cal diet (w/ some exercise) for about a week and ofcourse lost 4-5pounds in that time. Then we had a visitor from out of town and I ate normally (and probably a bit too much) for a couple days and literally gained it all back.

Now its been about 1.5 weeks since regaining the weight. I have since been much more reasonable about my diet-eating more calories, a balanced diet, but still being very aware of everything going in my mouth and making sure not to eat much at night. In the past this would have easily and quickly led to at least a few pounds weight loss by now and I would notice my pants fitting loser. BUT THEY ARE NOT!! What is happening? Is it possible my body refuses to lose weight despite my focused, but not extreme efforst? I feel like I'm doing everything right but I'm ready to quit. Can anyone help?

Not Losing Weight

Why is this not working for me? I've been trying for almost 2 weeks-definitely restricting my calories (about 1400-1500/day), increased aerobic activity and some weight lifting. I am eating mostly lowfat foods but making sure to have protein w/ each meal. My pants aren't in the least bit looser yet. This has never happened to me before. Is something wrong with me?

2 weeks is barely any time...

"About" isn't precise -are you weighing and measuring and keeping track of everyhing you're putting into your mouth...

Increased activity and some weight lifting aren't really all that descriptive.

Lowfat foods still have calories and fat isn't something to be feared...

What are your current stats?

I would start by getting an account at -and record accurarately everything you put in your mouth - for at least a month

and start reading the stickied threads around this forum - theres a lot of good info that will help you

re: not losing weight

Its me again. I am definitely counting. I am known in my circles to be on the compulsive side and sometimes 'overdo' diets. I run 3-4 miles at 8.30-9 minutes pace 3-4 times a week and do rigorous (Billy Blanks) videos a couple days a week. After being super duper restrictive for a week and then eating normally and gaining it all back in literally 3 days, I am once again trying to do this the right way, but I'm running out of patience!! Is it possible that I messed up my metabolism from that week of near starvation and now-two weeks later, the work I am doing is more keeping me from gaining extra weight rather than actually seeing a loss? Will the loss come?? I am a normal height and weight but have a gut.

P.s.

I have deliberately not been stepping on the scale for the past two weeks for fear the number will drive me to be too extreme. I guess I just wish mypants would feel even a little bit looser so at least I would know something is working. Do you guys suggest I just really try to be patient for a few more days? I had read that losing 5 pounds in 2-3 weeks is a very reasonable goal and even a bit low. I feel like there is something wrong with me-like my body is rebelling. I have never had this problem before.

yo-yoing isn't good for your long term success...

Super restriction doesn't help you if you gain it all back with "normal" eating... Change what's normal and find what you can live with for the rest of your life.

One week won't mess your metabolism...

1 percent of your body weight a week is a reasonable goal... but anything can make the scale change... Look at the big picture and not short term scale changes

Hey Loopy - it sounds like you're getting frustrated from misplaced expectations.

If you are normal height and weight, then you probably don't need to lose weight so much as tone. Doing cardio (such as running) generally won't help you tone - it will just use up calories. When you are doing a bunch of cardio your body will burn energy from any source it can find - including muscle - which will lead you to lose weight but not tighten up the flab.

I recommend a couple of things for you - first, set different expectations. If you want your body to look differently for the long term you need to think about changes to make forever. Two weeks is almost no time at all, and while it's frustrating not to have visible effects - it really is just too early to see yet. When you get your mind focused on the long term you'll be less frustrated.

Second, check out the stickies at the Weight Loss Through Exercise - especially Misconceptions.

I also encourage you to start a diary in the Weight Loss Diary board so that we can get to know you and see how you're doing.

re: not losing weight

Thanks for the feedback. If I am really do all the right things to lose weight-why are my pants still fitting the same way? It is true that really I'm looking to tone more than anything, but I would like for my pants to fit once again. Its hard talking to my husband about this b/c he gets frustrated with me for making such a big deal out of it and wishes I would not be so selfish (he is right) about being obsessed with it but when i put on weight it really makes me mad! I think it is reasonable for me to want to feel good and healthy as long as I am not being extreme-and I am not I just honestly feel that it is taking a whole heck of a lot of work and concentration for just a few pounds of fat to come off. My colleagues keep looking at my tummy-I'm pretty sure they think I am pregnant again b/c I look 4-5 months (that's where I mostly gain) and have a small frame-so a few pounds makes a dif. I'm sorry for being such a complainer but I'm just hoping that if I continue working at it and being patient that things will come together? Now-what to have for a small lunch!!

Sorry to be so desperate...

Yes its me again and I'm seriously wondering why, after nearly 2 weeks of careful dieting and (frankly) being hungry a good amount of time, my pants are still tight. Have people experienced it taking weeks before noticing any loss? I need a little something to reassure me that what I'm doing is actually paying off or I'm getting ready to throw the towel in!

you really don't need to start a new thread each time.. your original thread wil lcome to the top...

Desperation only leads to disappointment - you really need to calm down - take several deep breaths - start reading teh stickied threads (start in nutrition) and take a look at your expectations.

If you're ready to quit - quit what? life? after 2 weeks you've got a real problem

Check Out the Zone Diet

Hi,

It's not all about calorie restriction alone. What those calories come from makes all the difference. It's important to eat the amount of lean protein your body needs to maintain your muscle mass at your current level of activity , and then complement that with some carbs and fat (perferably fruit and veggies for carb, and monounsaturated fats like almonds, olive oil, avocados, etc.). When you do this you won't be hungery, won't have fluid retention, and you'll lost the excess stored body fat. This is the way I lost 100 pounds and have kept it off for the last 13 years.
