USA gets fatter again.

Here's the latest:
Obesity rates in 16 US states climbed over the past year, and not a single state reported a decline in the proportion of excessively overweight people, says a new report.

The report, published by HealthDay News - found that more than 30 per cent of the people in 12 states are obese. Four years ago, only one state could make that claim, according to Xinhua.

Twenty years ago, "there wasn't a single state that had an obesity rate above 15 per cent, and now every state is above that," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health that compiled the report.

"We have seen a dramatic shift over a generation. This isn't just about how much people weigh, but it has to do with serious health problems like diabetes and hypertension. These are the things that are driving health care costs," he said.

With the exception of Michigan, the 10 most obese states are in the south. The northeast and west reported the lowest obesity rates. In addition, in eight states, more than 10 percent of adults suffer from type 2 diabetes, the report said.

Mississippi, where 34.4 percent of the people are obese, has the highest obesity rate.

Other states with obesity rates above 30 percent include Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

Colorado, with an obesity rate of 19.8 percent, is the only state where the rate is less than 20 per cent, the report found.

Yes, but those rates don't take into consideration muscle mass. Those figures are never completely accurate.

I'm not 100% sure what your point is here?
Even if there are people overweight because of muscles mass, the stats (I would hope!) would be inaccurate both before and after.
What the study is emphasizing is increase in weight, not the actual weight itself.

What I'm saying is that everyone bases their opinions on America's weight by all of the stats, that are usually wrong. Come to Kentucky, where I live. I would say that most of the population here is pretty fit.

Well...... there's a lot of facts and figures out there. And they are based on averages of an area. I'm not sure what you're basing your opinion on, but can you provide any sort of study that will back up what you are saying?
Here's some specific information that I found about your state. There is always the possibility that it is not accurate. But you'd either have to do your own study, or provide other information to disprove this, or simply discredit the study by examining the methodology that was used.

I agree about muscle mass... it's also not taking into account bone density, and americans drink a lot of milk, so bones are much denser. Also, brain density... we have very dense brains. study flawed.

That's not what the study is about though. The study is showing a trend. When the first figures were collected, they didn't take those things into account either, so the general trend is still the same - it goes upwards. Or at least that is how I understand it.

And dense brains.....ahhh, the possibilities. :reddevil:

Statistics don't lie. They may not tell the whole story, but statistics don't lie.

............americans drink a lot of milk, so bones are much denser.............

In fact the trend of milk consumption is downwards

Cheese consumption is on the rise though. And in my observation it's very processed cheese.

Lots of developed countries drink more milk as it happens. Great source of protein.

Right...because, the government would NEVER lie to us. Every piece of information they obtain is completely untainted and true.

Seriously?

I'm not saying that people aren't getting fatter. I'm just saying that every other country likes to point the finger at us, like they are completely innocent. They also like to make it out that 90% of the population is gorging themselves on fast food.

Look at Britain...

How about the fact that we are NOT the fattest country?

The whole world is fat. Let's stop singling out the US, shall we?

You should know that's just not going to happen. Since the US is the champion of everyman's right to democracy and capitalism, foreign gov't will always use this as a form of propaganda to show the excesses of our "evil" Western culture.

How was the op attacking the USA? There's some deep seated paranoia going on here.

Other developed countries are developing obesity too. Catching up is nothing to be proud of either. Maybe they drink too much milk? lol

While other countries are undoubtedly catching up, there is still some clear daylight between #1 and the rest.

Try reading the post you're quoting. I never said attacked. I said pointing a finger.

The study was done in the United States, about the United States. No other country was mentioned, and it's not as if the study was done by some other country only to point fingers at the USA.

Yes, other countries have their own obesity problems, but that's not the point of the study. Point of the study is to show that things are getting worse within the United States, and that's the top and bottom of it.

Knowing that other countries are just as bad doesn't make it less bad either, so what does it matter how others are doing? It something that always confuses me...somebody points out something that is not good, and the reply is...'Yes, but XYZ is even worse.'...uhm...so what? Does the fact that somebody out there is even worse make it any better???? I think not.

Nobody was pointing fingers. They tried to show that there is a problem, and it's getting worse, that's all there is to it.

So....no one knew there was a problem before the post?
THAT is my point. Everyone knows there's a problem. Why point it out? Why not come up with solutions instead of pointing to the obvious?
Why is it so horrible that I showed statistics about other countries? I was merely pointing out that while we do have a problem here, we are not the only country who has this problem. As an American, I constantly hear flack about how lazy and fat we are, eluding to some notion that we are the worst kind of evil out there. While I know that's not where Monster was going with that, I still have the right to counter.

Sooooo, the increasing number of Americans who die from obesity-related causes every year are nothing more than a governmental conspiracy and not a proven, verified statistic?

Ok.

It sounds like a cliche but admitting there is a problem is the first step to a solution.

Arguing with the statistics just sounds like denial.
